Description

Sometimes it is only a True Friend who knows what we mean when we try to speak. (How to Cheat a Dragon’s Curse)

I was (once again) pretty desperate about the background and then I just went for wood when the scene was inside and wow it even ended up looking a bit like wood… Or didn’t? Well much better than I’ve expected anyway. (shut up, I know I should finally learn to draw folds on fabrics)

And how I mentioned last time some details sounding different when rereading while knowing the later books - well Stoick’s note about loyal people after this scene is definitely one of them…

Thank you very much!

I love how the saying "past has its way of catching upon us" (that's maybe not exactly) repeated many times in the book is so greatly shown in Hiccup's friendship with Fishlegs - he never let Fishlegs down and many times Fishlegs - directly or indirectly - saved his life or just the situation in general.

Thank you, I'm glad you like it!

Exactly.
What’s your favorite saying from the entire book series? Mine has got to be “History repeats itself.”
Hiccup and Fishlegs are my favorite duo. Especially if Cami is innit. That’s why I’m disappointed when I compared the book with the movies — I can’t believe that Hiccup and Fishlegs aren’t close friends before he defeated the Red Death, and how Camicazi was replaced by Astrid. The trio doesn’t exist in the franchise.

Well, I don't know if I could say I would have some particular saying as most favourite from the books, but if I would have to say something, I think that the one I mentioned previously could be the one. .

Yes! Hiccup and Fishlegs are great duo in books and perfect with Camicazi as well

I think the best is not compare books and movies at all, movies are too different, not just in the story but also in characters.

When I saw the first movie (knowing just first few books (not sure how many)) I was highly disappointed what did they do to Fishlegs in the movies and why the hell is he not a friend of Hiccup. And to be honest I'm not much interested in the movie Hiccup/Astrid romance either.

I read somewhere that Astrid is meant to be Camicazi but this could say only someone who didn't read the books at all. Like the only thing they have in common is the blond hair. And maybe the fighting skills (but I bet Camicazi would beat Astrid in no time lol).

And it doesn't seem to me that movie Hiccup and Fishlegs would be very close friends not even at the end of the first movie.

It's just totally different. And after finishing all books this august I'm even more annoyed with the differences, especially when it comes to Fishlegs. (but I mentioned that already by my previous drawing(s)).

I'm not even sure I want to see the third movie now %D

Same here.

Buut, I’m waayy too interested in what was going to happen in the third movie, so I’ll watch it anyway, seeing the second movie was pretty great in animation and storyline. XD

Maybe it IS best to not compare the books to the movies, but sometimes it just bursts out. I can’t help but feel disappointed, heh.

Yeah, movies as themselves ARE good and great to watch, no doubt about that. One just has to think about it as a different story/world/whatever. Which is not quite easy when characters have the same name... %/ (speaking of names - when they used most of the names of the main characters, why is Hiccup's mother called Valka and not Valhalarama? I mean it's not the same is it? Not that it was a big problem, as I mentioned I would be glad if most of the characters had different names...)

What I still love about the movies is the music though. I like music from movies like that (mostly instrumental and "big") and when can I get the soundtrack I then often listen to it just as the music itself (don't relate it to the original story that much (does it make sense?)). With HTTYD movies soundtracks I often listened to it when drawing books fanart and could even imagine some scenes from the books together with some tracks .

I'm looking forward to soundtrack to the third movie. (and yes I could buy it even if I didn't go to see the movie )

I said this on tumblr already but I love how you made him look both nervous and determined! The emotion in this is incredible!

Thank you very much! That's exactly what I tried to put in the expression, I'm happy that you see it there so that I succeeded a bit

The expression on his face is perfect. He's sure he's doing the right thing, he hopes.

You have enough variation in the pencil strokes that that background looks like wood planks to me. I can tell that you are still learning the medium, but those planks have both the visual and tactile texture of wood. You are developing a fine illustrative style.

Thank you very much, a compliment on a face expression always means a lot to me!

And I'm glad it's not just me with the look of the wood!

It's funny, I was using colour pencils like since forever and I've returned back to more drawing about two years ago or so, but only recently it seems that I'm starting to learn to use them properly (like blending for example, I hardly ever did that when drawing years ago (to be honest I didn't quite know it's common with colour pencils)), though I'm working mostly just intuitively (i.e. the way I was always drawing. Don't know what changed...).

Thank you

This is a guess on my part, but it fits with what I've seen in my own learning curve. What has changed is not that you've set out to learn something, you've learned through the experience of doing. Somewhere in your mind you are picking up on what is happening with the line and color as you work the pencils. You may not be able to express it, but you are becoming able to use what you are learning.

When I've had, over the years, people who've looked through my sketchpads say that they wish they could learn to draw as good as that, I tell them to draw something everyday.. I also tell them to look at work that excites then, but the most important thing is to draw. When it comes to drawing, doing is one of the best teachers out there.

Ah, that makes sense.

The truth is that I was drawing quite a lot during last year or so, like much more than ever before and really almost every at least a bit.
