Side-canon from one of the official books apparently.
Having strong earth pony genes might explain her difficulty with flying though. More muscle and bone density, or weaker natural pegasus magic making it difficult for her to get airborne and such.

You know, that why I think Trixie isn't too good at magic, I like to think that one of her parents isn't a unicorn. Someone we think is her mother was shown in one page of the comics that was a unicorrn, so maybe her father was an earth pony or something? This is all speculation and DHX REALLY NEEDS TO SHOW US TRIXIE'S PARENTS. Sorry, I'll shut up now.

Possible, but I think Trixie simply falls under the "average" unicorn magic level. Way back when Twilight stated that most unicorns don't normally have particularly powerful magic, and what magic they do have is usually focused on their special talent.

So, Pony genetics are Hybrids? That explains there's no earth-pony-turned-alicorn...
But Bulk Biceps...

All four pony races seem to be genetically compatible with each other due to all being sub-species of the same primary species. After all we do have the Cakes (both earth ponies) who had unicorn and pegasus foals, and Shining Armor is only a unicorn but produced an Alicorn with Cadence.
I think the lack of earth pony Alicorns is simply due to there not being any story for one yet. Celestia, Luna and Flurry Heart were born as Alicorns, Twilight was a unicorn, and Cadence was a pegasus, but aside from them there aren't any more Alicorns that we know of.
Bulk I can only guess has powerful pegasi magic offset by the sheer weight of his muscle mass.

That was a very detailed explanationΒ of ponyΒ genealogy... which makes sense. One question remains, do hybrids exist? The half-pegasus half-earth pony, or is it an exclusively dominant set of genes that block the recessive traits? If so, which gene is recessive?
Based on the case of cakes babies, it seems that Earth Pony gene eclipses the Pegasus and Unicorn gene. So, we should, in theory, have more Earth ponies than any other sub-species. is it true though? Has somepony counted the population of Equestria?

auren-dawnstar In reply to FFaUniHan [2018-03-05 13:13:02 +0000 UTC]
I'm sure there are dominant traits involved to some degree. Most likely determining their body structure (bone/muscle density and whether they have wings or a horn), and the capabilities of their magic. I would also say that a lot of, if not most, ponies are hybrids between the races to some degree. Given that the population has been intermingling for over a millennium.
The main exceptions would be the populations of Cloudsdale and Canterlot. With both having high pegasus and unicorn populations respectively, and most likely to have less hybrids due to that. However, it's hard to say just what the ratio between races would be since we've only seen only small samples of Equestria's population.

That is a very thoughtful thought exercise... Now, what about the Crystal ponies? I don't even know what they are. A variation, or a completely different subspecies? Coz we have a Unicorn Crystal Ponies (Radiant Hope), Earth Crystal Ponies, and Pegasus Crystal Ponies (Cadance).

I donβt know who came up with the idea of these two being friends, but itβs adorable.
BONUS: Imagine Rainbow Dash acting suspicious of the two of them hanging around, but sheβs actually forgiven Tempest and sheβs just jealous that Scootaloo has another cool adult in her life.
