When you start out to draw something like this, is whatever it becomes intentional, or does it just kind of happen?

This is very much just a sort of happening. Sometimes I might have a bit of intent or an idea thrown at the start, but that conscious decision is usually buried by a process of almost unconscious wandering. The end result is almost always unexpected.
Most instances of intent serve only to function as catalysts.
