Description Some Star Trek fanart attempting to do away with one of the biggest problem of Star Trek: it's incredible overuse of Planet of the Hats

"War is good for business"
-34th Rule of Acquisition

There is a common conception of the Ferengi are nothing but a race of feeble greedy cowards. A stereotype which a fair number of less than enlightened individuals have been disillusioned of when they faced an Eliminator squad. Most school firms have contracts with the Ferengi Alliance to identify prospective recruits around age twelve based on a commission basis. While this system does provide a fair number of rejects which meet only a fraction of the required criteria by schools attempting (and generally failing) to game the system, it does meet the recruitment needs. With the consent of the father (who is awarded some compensation for the losses incurred in a family member leaving his household early and thus cutting him off from exploitation) and the prospective recruit the individual is taken for a six year long training program. Eliminators are trained in combat in a wide variety of environments from the swampy bogs common across much of Ferenginar to deserts, forests, urban combat, underwater operations and zero-g. They are capable pilots of both spacecraft and ground vehicles. Though Eliminators are expected to fill a variety of roles they generally adopt a specialty that they are to excel in (sniping, demolitions, heavy weapons, field engineering, etc). Officers are either selected in training for command or are promoted from battle hardened soldiers.

In particular the military creed of the Eliminators is based around the 16th Rule of Acquisition: A Deal is a Deal. They all know what they've signed up for, that risks are part of the job, that part of the agreement is to keep their comrades in arms alive and that if the Ferengi are to thrive and profit in an often hostile galaxy a strong hand is often necessary. One of the more notable manifestations of this is that Eliminator Officers are almost always thoroughly honest with their men. So much that unless time is at an absolute premium (IE a firefight) they will almost invariably start sentences with "As Far as We Know", "From what we can gather" and similar. There has been several instances of unfortunate 'accidents' befalling those officers who knowingly gave their troops false information as well as a few public suicides by others for the same reason. For their services, Eliminators are well paid and in their contracts are bonuses for successful missions. Even so about 90% of their wages are held until honorable discharge. There are also four distinct corps of eliminators which compete with each other. After retirement Eliminators are often removed from mainstream Ferengi society. Some make investments and run enterprises, but many find work as guards, hired muscle and hitmen.

In combat situations eliminators are given a uniform which suit of multi layer armor rated against most fire from small arms as well as a personal shield generator. Good reliable troops cost a lot to train and advanced protection is a sensible investment. Their helmets have reinforced protection and cushioning for their lobes as well as various systems to both make the best use of acute hearing and to address the weaknesses of sensitivity. They are armed with a variety of combat weapons including (but not limited to) combat knives, plaser weapons ranging from pistols to carbines to sniper rifles to automatic support weapons, plasma throwers, missile launchers, mortars and explosives. Among their most distinctive weapons are locator bombs, small programmable robots carrying an explosive charge and a variety of sensors to seek out targets, fly over using anti-gravity systems and then detonate. Eliminators are as a rule opportunistic and survival minded, using any ploy at hand to win (barring the fact that they normally offer quarter to their foes if remotely practical, since it gives them an incentive to throw down their weapons). People who truly get on the bad side of the Ferengi Commerce Authority can find themselves on the wrong end of an Eliminator's Plaser, even if many of them find the FCA liquidators who requisitioned their help are more unpleasant. This has gained Eliminators infamy among the Klingon Empire, for in the Ferengi/Klingon scuffles in which Eliminator units were deployed the exchange rate has distinctly fallen in the Eliminator's favor.

I love it when a person of a particular race known for one things acts and interprets it another. Like General Chang and Kor for the Klingons,
Kor is pretty much the archetype of Klingons but more refined and cleaned up unlike TNG's dog like versions as is discussed here sfdebris.com/videos/startrek/s… . And Chang while bloodthirsty is calm and intelligent as best shown in Academy.

Basically writers really need to stop doing the same thing over and over with Warrior cultures, and take a more interesting approach like the Luxans in Farscape or the Mandalorians in KOTOR.

We did get to see an Eliminator in "The Magnificent Ferengi"; first time we ever saw Leck he was lovingly sharpening a knife while talking to Quark, coming across as a person to take seriously, without just being a Klingon in Ferengi makeup

Hey, any good legitimate business organization needs an efficient security and enforcement unit.

I like this idea!  Of course, their formal name would be "Contract Enforcement and Loss Prevention Agents".

I an so tempted to steal this idea, but I'd much rather borrow it...
