Description Siltshifters are among the most ubiquitious fresh water Piscisoids Native to Nova Atlantis. No less than 800 species of these adaptable creatures have been cataloged. These range in size from minnow to manatee sized creatures. They are omnivorous and normally bottom feeders, shifting through the silt with their dexterous barbels in search of anything they can eat, ranging from plant matter to smaller animals to carrion. Some even fill the role of marine ambush predator, one usually filled by swampstrikers. Like most Nova Atlantean Piscisoids, they swim mainly using their side fins as oars. A few saltwater species are know to exist and a few species are capable of spending several days out of water.

Siltshifters have on the whole done well after the arrival of humans. They breed very quickly and generally have robust digestive tracts. They can subsist on some degree of terragen carrion and algae, even if the native foods are better for them. They are occasionally preyed upon by introduced bullsharks, but again even with the addition of genetically modified gut bacteria these terragen predators can only gain marginal nutrition from native Nova Australian creatures. Some species of Siltshifters have been added to the Canals of the Cities of the Novan Empire and have even been imported offworld. Although some native folk medicines have arose based around Siltshifter Organs and some species are valued as trophies, most species of Siltshifters are considered garbage fish by anglers.
