After reading several of the critiques, I have to disagree with most. Whereas others see it as a disenchantment of love, I find it highly romantic and sensual.

Anyone who has ever been in a long-term romance knows that sex becomes less and less a necessity and more just... something you do. And yet the couple in this piece are having their romance with their morning reads.

When in a relationship for a very long time you lose the intense need to constantly talk to each other and whisper sweet nothings. But you still want to be around each other. You still want to feel close to your significant other. What better way to feel that closeness than through sex itself?

The love is still there and it's gotten to be so strong the couple don't -need- to arouse each other, they just want to feel close to each other. They don't -need- to feel amorous in order to be loving. They are each getting pleasure from the other even if it doesn't include the average romantic notions.

This piece is shows the silent communication lovers gain from knowing each other for a long enough time.

Although I don't think that's what the photographer was trying to portray, it's what I see.Β

I completely agree with you. It seems to me that this is the downfall of so many relationships. People seem to get so caught up in Hollywood's perception of love, that anything that's lacking that representation in the slightest just means that the other person is no longer in love with you. It's like women have been taught through television that if the man isn't constantly wining and dining you and giving you exactly what you want all the damn time he's no longer worthy of your love. It seems to me that America has such an unrealistic grip on what love even is.

This is love. Β

It could never be anything else for too long.Β

I actually don't think this is the idea of the author, since the title is "casual sex" and the description says "the american dream": these clarify the intention to show what sex has become in our society with the introduction of the so-called "casual sex".
Yours is an interesting interpretation of the picture, though it may also be correct considering the fact that sex becomes increasingly more "casual" when you get to know your partner, no more something special but something usual and natural.

I actually completely agree with what you've said here, it's too bad the notion of love is so romantacized people can't think of it that way.

The first two critiques said it all.
The definitions of "casual sex" and this type of sex shown in the picture are different but, in some way, they intersect. Sex is often taken as a priority towards love, a thing so common in society that people are losing their virginity sooner and sooner. Casual sex is an even more common -and absurd to me - thing in society; to have no bonds with someone while doing a thing that (at least I consider) it's so sacred. They didn't care enough to actually pay attention to what they are doing or even to take all clothes off, which shows a lack of bonding and relationship.
Both the meaning of the image and the clothes, the very newspapers and the people in the image - his hair, the tattoos, pink hair, among others - show with precision the reality of the society.
About the drawing itself, this could almost be a picture, it's so well made, the colors, the anatomy, the poses, the very details are very well made and make of this image a image with a huge impact.

You are correct. but it is better to note that not only lovers, but also very close friends do have sex. The subject is "Casual sex", not "lovers". (this is only another perspective)

Any time that media of any kind makes a point of taking a serious look at a situation and illustrates its point by making the situation less than serious, I have to sit up and take notice. This images does, as pointed out in previous critiques, more than adequately prove just how funny the notion of sex, of any kind, being 'casual' really must be.

The very thought of the act of coitus being reduced to something done by rote while handling other, more interesting undertakings....or while doing a crossword and reading the Sunday supplements....is absurd almost to the point of hilarity. It's also just a little bit sad and has the potential to leave those involved feeling just that little bit more dead inside for having been in on the action. The concept, composition and actual creation of an image that conveys this without being camp in any way is something that I applaud.

In terms of the image itself, I really like the way the desaturation adds to the intended statement. Sex, love-making and all out, over the top bedroom shenanigans are usually something that we all imagine in bright colour because this stuff is IMPORTANT. Sex is so deeply ingrained in us as a species that we cannot help but add bright lights and matching colours to our fantasies about it.

Taking the colour away and adding what appears to be either a PP sheen a la Photoshop or an HDR edit really makes this appear surreal in the right way. There is always a chance of some types of post processing messing up perspectives in an image but I really like how this turned out.

Over all, this just plain works for me. Two good looking, hip and contemporary young people having sex and there is absolutely nothing sexy about it except for the production value of the actual image. I don't think that the end result could be much more accurate to the mission's original intent.

And, it must be said, this is beyond funny. You can bet that I'll be sharing this so that plenty of others can be impressed while having a really good laugh!

Extremely well done. Heading for my favourites as soon as I figure out exactly which category it belongs in....

I saw the title first, and it intrigued me. After looking at the picture in a larger form, I was surprised, and almost shocked. People don't always think of sex nearly on the same level as other things described as casual. Casually reading a magazine, newspaper, book, walking... The reality is sex isn't casual. Depicting it as such illustrated just how not-casual it is.

The only qualms I have with technique would be the mans arms, newspaper, and head seeming unusually contrasted, coloured, or off compared to the rest of the picture. Other than that, it seems absolutely flawless.

The pale, washed out feel this photo contains gives It a nice vintage look, like this was shot with an older camera or shot a long time ago. But everything looks washed out, which poses somewhat of a problem when I try to concentrate on the subjects themselves; there should be somewhat of a difference to the background and the subjects, such as a darker background; it also became somewhat of an eyesore to view because both the background and the subjects are both very busy which further complicates everything, making it look muddled together and crowding the way I view both the woman and the man. Since the couple is the main subject, the background should be uncluttered, so that there is a sure sense of which one to concentrate on.
This was very appealing because although their accomplishing a sexual act, both the subjects are so engrossed in their reading material that they don't seem to notice anything else, which makes this piece very humorous; plus this is a very original idea since i haven't come across anything else like it, so kudos to the artist for accomplishing such originality.

I really like this picture! The thing that caught me was that Casual Sex is a song by the Faint. and you see, I love the faint. What I like most about the picture is the idea xD and how they aren't really paying attention to each other at all. I really love the lady's tattoos and amazin hair. And the guy's gauges. I like gauges. I also like the background of the wall behind the man. and how the pillow case matches the lady's bra xD The look on the guy's face is so funny ha ha. nice job :]
