Description The thumbnail is VERY UGLY. Please see it full-size before saying anything about the distortion. XD

A revisit of a revisit of a portrait from 2008 , this is the third and probably final version of my Aquasapiens/mermen portrait, mainly because I should probably paint new images rather than try to improve old ones.

Yes, I know the green guy looks high/drunk/disoriented, but hey, you'd feel weird too if you'd just finished transforming into one.

[edit] Due to many, many people telling me to make it brighter, I have-- about four times, but anyway. Is it bright enough now? I didn't mean to overdo the darkness, honest.

(Tch, I wanted to comment more in-person..ish, but.. before I FORGET.)

When it was REALLYDARK the wispiness of the outlines and the transparent effects on the fins were a bit more stick-outty, but yeah, I really had to look at that in the VERY dark, screen brightness way up and squinting from an inch away.. your screen really must have some serious SHINE powers.

Maybe a good way around it (other than blocking out the colors first.. HOW DOES THAT WORK INEVERGETITRIGHT) is to always have a splotch of the lightest color you want in the picture around somewhere on there, as well as the darkest. That way you can keep track of where inbetween you are?

BUTYEAH. The wispiness of no-outline is veryvery Ohhh.

*expert phrasing*

I dunno how to get colour right the first time. I don't know how to get colour right at all, actually. *snork* This is still very much the original painting underneath a shit-ton of overlay filter layers. :[ All I really did to it aside from add MORE overlay filters was... fixing the line art so that I could colour it (I'd done it rather awkwardly originally in order to make the outermost lines thicker than what I'd initially done...), and then... coloured it. *snork* And re-did the shading layers. Oh, and I put the fins on their own layer so that I could make them see-through.

...but yeah, colour/lighting is not my strong suit. :[

Neither mine. *CRY.*

(I think before getting the colors right it's all about getting the CONTRAST right, actually. But yeah. I knows the theory, but the day I actually manage to draw it out right will be a glorious one...)

Is there a story for this picture? I'm very interested.

I don't have a story for this particular image exactly, but the species has a little bit of a back story that I can't go into detail on.

I think you should bump up the brightness and contrast; it's a bit of a strain on the eyes. Other than that, this is wonderful! [:

I really gotta stop painting in the dark; I've brightened it twice already. :[ Either that, or turn the brightness down on the monitor...

I like the quality of the light on their skin and the atmospheric and Depth of Field effects.

Do more stuff!

I want to! I'm so self-conscious though, it's awkward doing stuff with someone looking over my shoulder most of the time... sooo not used to that! Plus I only have like another month here and then I get shipped back to America, and despite commissions, I really don't want to spend my last month with my boyfriend... not being with my boyfriend. x_x

I LOVE IT! I love their chary design! I love the flowiness of their poses... really feels like underwater and I love the (mono)tone/shade/lack of contrast/dimness... as it really makes it seem like they are deep underwater!

I know you said that this was the last time you would edit this pic, but I think it's just a tad too dark. Other than that I really like it. Maybe you could bump up the brightness just a bit. Or you could paint something completely new too.

I actually updated this once already because it was even darker (I dunno what the deal is with me and dark pictures!) and I really noticed it earlier today, but you're right; it's still pretty dark. I don't know if I've necessarily fixed it, but it is a little bit brighter now.
