Taxila Stone is a hard limestone. The name Taxila, is derived from the sanscrit "Takh Shila" Meaning the city of cut stone as no brick was used in the construction of any stupa or monastary.

The art of stone sculpture and masonry in the region started in about the 1st Century BC and has been passed down from generation to generation and still remains not only alive today, but a major regional business and livlihood.
