That pretty much sums it up, though the anger and angst starts about the end of book 4/beginning of book 5 (after seeing Cedric die, Harry was never the same and then it just went down hill from there, poor guy.) It amazes me how happy and functional Harry and his friends are in the epilogue, it just doesn't seem very realistic to me, they've gone through so much trauma and Harry spends years in angst and anger and then he's just happy and "normal" by the epilogue.

I completely agree. Also, Harry would never have even started out at Hogwarts as relatively happy and mentally stable as he was, having had his childhood abused and neglected so much by his foster care. His anger and general negative attitude from year 5 onwards makes complete sense, given how he was raised.Β
In terms of the 19-year gap between Voldy's defeat and the epilogue, there are many fanfictions that are really well written and stay, as far as I can assume, in-character. I think after the war Harry just took like, say, 5 years (that seems to be the consented allotment of time in fanfiction) to just chill out, reflect and collect himself. Having children probably really grounded Harry; family and love are his pillars and I think needing to be there for his own family would have really helped him recover. Especially because the Weasleys offered such a solid support group.Β

I think the angst and anger in the later books are more because of what he's experienced and being connected to a dark wizard than his childhood. One of the things I really like about the end of The Hunger Games series is that even though Katniss and Peeta live and start a new life they still suffer from what they experienced in their past (Katniss admits she still suffers from nightmares for example.) I kind of imagine Harry (Ron and Hermione possibility as well) would suffer from nightmares, flashbacks and the like (how can anyone NOT suffer from PTSD after experiencing all that?!)
You're also right about being fairly happy after all the abuse and neglect he went through, you'd think such a great writer like Rowling could understand and explain the damage that abuse and neglect has on a child. What really bugs me is that Dumbledore didn't even make sure that Harry was being treated properly. Dumbledore didn't really seem to care about Snape either, he obviously suffered from serious depression for years (he probably had depression as a teenager too, much the same as Harry did, who no one tried to get help for either but even worse), he could've explained to Harry that Snape was in a lot of pain and not to judge Snape too harshly when he was being mean but he didn't

Yeah, I think we can assume that Harry and everyone from the war suffered their own PTSD. She doesn't say it explicitly, but that's because I don't think she needs to.Β
I mean, I never really liked Dumbledore in the first place. Yes he's whimsical and helps Harry through some dangerous situations, but the kind of help he offered was very distant and convoluted, and buried in layers of manipulation. He definitely should have checked up on Harry's early quality of life WAY before that one time in sixth year. He just blindly assumed Petunia would care for the only part of her sister she had left, but he greatly underestimated Petunia's jealousy and jaded opinion of Lily. Same with Snape. I agree, Dumbledore should have been a bit more sympathetic towards what the man had been through. He also should have explained to Harry why Snape was such a dick all the time. Also, I think Harry should have made a better effort to communicate with Snape about his father's behaviour after having scene that memory sequence in the pensieve. They could have helped each other out a lot more, all three of them. Definitely some lost opportunity there.Β

very funny and to me humour is the best way of expressing acute insights, enlightened teachers are always cracking jokes to undermine the ego and anxiety, i've often heard the dalai lamar says ''fuck magic'' as an ice breaker in tense situations.
