I have no idea how Elven aging is supposed to work but I always pictured him a bit old, given that he is Legolas' dad.

Elven aging takes all time of Arda thus they are ageless to our eyes, forever young. That's why old Thranduil doesn't work well, but Bill Nighy is a very good idea Especially in Underworld the Rise of Lycans he feels like a Noldo to me.

This looks very similar to the opening cinematic of the original "Age of Wonders"-game, when they show the Elven king Inioch right before humanity arrives and puts the world into chaos.

I had to look that up, there is a bit of a similar vibe there, Thranduil looks more troubled, understandable given he's got "the Necromancer" on his doorstep.
