Thank you, for providing the Deviantart community so wonderful a piece of artwork. I hope, with the skill that created this, your artwork branches much further than DA. With this quality, persistently, I'm sure it will. (:

what did you use to make the backround black

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Indy-Lytle In reply to Persephone479 [2011-01-25 06:27:34 +0000 UTC]

I went over the background with an 8B pencil, then darkened it in photoshop to clean it up.

Indy-Lytle In reply to Persephone479 [2011-01-27 05:32:48 +0000 UTC]

More advice, I used a range of pencil types, the most important being 8B, 4B, 2B, B, HB (HB is a standard pencil). For my HB I just use a mechanical pencil, the B's are softer the higher the number the softer they are and the darker they will draw. Also for getting the smoothed look, kleenex to smudge and blend the skin, it takes a bit to get it smooth but it will eventually get there. Also always use a clean eraser, I use an exacto Knife to cut away the dirty ends so that I can get the cleanest erase. And for example if you are left handed you may consider drawing from the top right of the page and working down to the left bottom, this is to stop smudging, you don't have to obviously follow that to the letter but it's good to be aware that this can happen. Another option is to alway keep a clean sheet of paper under your hand so your hand isn't rubbing on the piece while you are working. Try to avoid touching the paper with your finger tips directly, oil will come off and it will leave finger prints.
Once again hope this helps

k so how did you manage the eyes theyre KILLING me

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Indy-Lytle In reply to Persephone479 [2011-01-28 04:23:46 +0000 UTC]

Well her eyes are fairly easy in the long run, mostly due to the fact that they are always half open, so the shadows are pretty strong. So her eyes tend to be mostly black, people fill in the details on there own. The best advice is to take your time, eyes are hard to get right on, but if you take your time you should be fine. Just don't be afraid to lay down dark areas, that tends to be a big issue when starting in portrait art, but soon enough dark pencils become your best friend.

Indy-Lytle In reply to Persephone479 [2011-01-27 05:24:25 +0000 UTC]

The best advice I would have is to take your time, smooth it out. Make sure to take a few steps back every so often to take a look from a distance. Have a lot of reference photos on your table while you work, it helps to see all the little details (I take a few ref photos and blow them up for certain parts of the face to help me better see what is going on there). I would recommend leaving her hair until the last, I found her hair difficult to render mostly because blondes are alway really hard to render.
Sorry it took so long to get back to you and I hope that this helps Also I can not wait to see your finished Marilyn

Wow, did you do this with traditional media? You mention touchups in PS, but I wasn't sure about the original drawing. Very well done, all her features are entirely on-the-mark! This looks photorealistic.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Indy-Lytle In reply to kaikaku [2008-11-29 04:54:28 +0000 UTC]

Marilyn herself is completely done by pencil, the black background was the only item touched up in photoshop because the background needed to be darkened in photoshop to give it the smooth clean look.
