I like the older style photograph. I think it would be difficult to portray melancholia in color, too. The contrasting black-and-white of her features gives it a somewhat stark feel to it, I think. Melancholy is an emotion I know quite well - too well, really - and I think you portrayed it well, while adding some more artistic and conceptual qualities to it.
