The air was so rife with nerves that he could feel it. Yes, that electric mix of nervous excitement and pure fear. His aim was to treat this as any other show after all one oxer is much like another when you take away the fancy uprights. Besides his horse loved to jump, he trusted that grey more than he trusted most humans, they’d get around it one way or another so why worry?
But as he stood there watching the others warm up it was so blatantly obvious that some did not have the same carefree attitude when it came to performing.
He hadn’t been here more than a few moments and he could already see one riding around as if their dignity rested on the result of the round, another whose hands shook at the prospect of riding in that arena.
Then again it could just be his lack of shame or maybe the fact that his life experiences have shown him that things could be far worse than knocking a pole, messing up a jump, falling off you horse or ripping your jhods on international television, whatever those worries might be.

He should really get moving, he couldn’t put off warm up any longer. Sooner or later sails would have to see those jumps and get it into that head of his that they were indeed going out there to do his favourite thing. And with that suddenly Nathan would have 17.2 hands of ‘keen’ thoroughbred on his hands.

He wasn’t your typical equestrian and he was well aware, while many grew up with horses, Nathan at the age of 20 was still yet to see a real horse in the flesh let alone get close to one. The past was the past and here he was now sitting atop of his grey waiting to be called into the arena “In and out, focus” he took a deep breath, using the moment to get himself into the mindset, taking in those sounds, the atmosphere around them, going over that course route in his head one last time before they were up.

Sails was a different story, antsy, ready to go, prancing about on the spot he grew impatient as those seconds passed knowing what lay ahead, knowing there would be jumps to fly over and a crowd to perform for. “Steady… we’re not going for the world speed record idiot...canter round, get a look at the place and then we can go. Devons going to kill you and me both if we tank though the middle of the combination...again.” It wasn't the first time it had happened. Sails easily became an overzealous horse convinced that his way was right and that those combination jumps were big simply big oxers, a challenge waiting to be overcome. The seconds ticked past, minutes and yet they were still waiting... he looked around wondering what the delay was but there were no signs of anything unusual. There was only so much his voice could do to distract the grey with his mind set on what lay ahead. “We’ve got to be on our best behaviour. You hear me, you and me both. Dads watching and hun and the kids, we go out there, we have fun and we do it for them okay?... that’s it good lad, we got this, just another show, you know what to do.”
