Description A couple of mockup models sheets I drew over an evening while I wait to hear back on The BARTKIRA Roadshow. Β  Hit download to see it a little larger.

Kaneda's movie costume has a surprising amount of pink and orange in it. I don't know how I never noticed it, but I checked several still frames and it's pretty consistent. It's always depicted as being red leather in cosplay and in many of Otomo's original comics illustrations, but in the animation... pink and orange. I'm sure there's reasons for that, like I said I don't know how it is it never really registered to me before. I've certainly watched AKIRA enough times, but it's really eye-opening to be reminded how color-blind I am (artistically, not physically).

I'm near certain that the model sheet I based the Bart design on is too modern for the style of the eventual trailer. Nevertheless it's what I had in hand to work with, and it's all just practice wankery anytoots.

Drawn in Photoshop with my faithful old Cintiq. I haven't been picked up for the Roadshow project yet, but I'll let you know when I hear otherwise.

I bet the color seemed more red to you because of all the other greys or muted tones in the movie. The only scene I could see a difference is after they are arrested from the bike run and when he tries to get the girl to turn herself in for the guy she killed.

Great fun. I especially like Milhouse as Tetsuo (Milsuo?) - there's something quite delightful about having the luckless little dweeb cast in the role of a terrifyingly powerful psychokinetic nutter.

Inkthinker In reply to MatthewSmith [2015-04-25 20:14:29 +0000 UTC]

I can't take much credit for the casting, but he does fit the role really well. I'm guessing that clear match in the relationship between Bart and Milhouse, Kaneda and Tetsuo, is one of the things that attracted James Harvey (the artist who originally sparked the project ) in the first place. Other characters are harder to match up, but that central casting rings true.

It's a classic, but a little weird. Try and catch it with subtitles if you can, or the old Streamline dub if you must. The latest blu-ray release has 'em all.

Krusty as Joker. You can see their full casting list on one of their pages.

I'd say about half is pretty dead-on perfect, some key roles had to be fitted with obscure Simpsons characters (like casting Laura Powers as Kei) but overall it's pretty solid.

trepptoxic In reply to Inkthinker [2014-12-06 17:02:06 +0000 UTC]

Hmm that's fitting it makes sense. So if I remember right Nelson(Yamagata) is going to get blown up?. The lineup is solid, are you going to make a comic? If so, how would I get a copy?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to trepptoxic [2014-12-07 22:04:43 +0000 UTC]

The comic already exists. Because it's a non-profit work of art, you can read it for free... some print editions exist as part of gallery showings, but I'm not sure how to get one.

The comic is a collaborative effort on the part of hundreds of artists, each working in their own style across 3-5 pages before passing the baton. I've applied, but won't likely be accepted for the comics because there's a backlog of volunteers. But I've also applied for the animated project related to the comics, wherein animators will collaborate to recreate a mock animated movie trailer.

Nah, not really. I'm inspired by the comics project, and I'm interested in participating in the animation project, but there's nothing more significant to this than that, for now.

I suspect red pops too hard on screen, especially as an animated object in contrast to the painted background?

Either way, it's a really interesting observation.

PPS. THE CHARACTERS FIT SO WELL IN THEIR ARCHETYPES HAHAHA

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to Quirkilicious [2014-12-01 10:03:51 +0000 UTC]

It's gotta be something like that. I'm just shamefully blind to it, which means I can't create it properly. That's a problem for me, I gotta work on that.

I didn't set the casting, but I think one of the reasons this goofy premise actually clicked was that amongst all the absurdity of the Simpsons universe being recast into AKIRA, Bart and Milhouse really do make a perfect Kaneda and Tetsuo.

The had to stretch for some other roles, but the core conflict is between those two and it just clicks. And there's enough of the other roles clicking as well (Ralph as Akira, Krusty as Joker, Ned Flanders as Ryu) that it keeps on being funny for a long while.

Your drawing are really close to the actual models.Β  It's hard to draw these guys especially at first, they look easy but then you try and you're like, "wow this is complicated."Β  Even after drawing them so many times I still say that to myself haha.Β  These look great though, I hope you get picked, not just for your drawing ability but for your amazing animation abilities.Β  Good luck friend!

Inkthinker In reply to Morpheus306 [2014-12-01 09:56:10 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

It's all thanks to the various model sheets and screencaps that I found online. I'm not above dropping the sheet under my sketch to check it and revise, and in the case of Bart and Millhouse their substructure is pretty easy... plus I have the benefit of dressing them up, which covers for myriad sins. Let's not sell my ability to seamlessly pick up the style until someone hits me with a hard one.

But yeah, it's kinda the job to be able to break down a style and try to mimic it, so I hope I'm doing it well enough to pass on the fly. Luckily after all these years there's a pretty consistent style guide on The Simpsons. If anything, I worry that maybe I'm being too on-the-nose for the project at hand, but this is how I'd want to do it.

Morpheus306 In reply to Inkthinker [2014-12-01 23:15:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah one thing I learned is that all the characters are basically the same.Β  Bart and Millhouse have the same body construction, just like Homer and Apu have the same.Β  I think you should just do it the way you want and what you're comfortable with.Β  I hope you get a chance to work on this because your animation would be sweet.

Yeah, I noticed Homer and Krusty have nearly identical models, which of course plays into the episode where Homer goes to clown school.

I hope so too, we'll have to see what happens!

Pretty cool and that motorcycle image too. Β I think what makes colors sometimes hard to discern in those movies is because they chose how colors have to look like considering the environments. Β Color schemes and palettes that has to match to give use the impression that something's the same color no matter what the lighting and environment are, so that even gray can look like green sometimes. Β but I'm like you, focused on black and white for many years. Β Anyways, good luck with the project : )
