Description Hoooly crap this is old. This is almost ten years old. I was pretty surprised when I found it.

I drew this back in 1997, when I was really getting into the swing of my style. I was pretty much entirely self-taught as a cartoonist and illustrator, and I'd been faking my way through the illustration of a whole kid's magazine for about three years at this point, basically making up all the rules of drawing as I went. I'd learned to ink with mechanical pencils, but I was doing this fake "brush-stroke" style of heavy and thin line weights. I shudder to recall, but I was a cocky li'l sumbitch.

Anyhow, I was always doing stuff to add to my portfolio and try to get more freelance work with (this was before I got into the Internet, so basically I just always carried a couple sketchbooks and a small portfolio case of prints everywhere I went. I shit you not, I always had my portfolio nearby, just in case I met someone who needed art done). I was purposefully attempting to mimic a sort of 90's club design with the character, while playing off the cartooning skills I'd been refining with my magazine work, and did this little dude up.

I still like the drawing, but his feet are stupid-big. I need to put Charlie Brown shirts on characters more often.

It makes a pretty huge difference, now. It's hard to see, sometimes, it's so big, but yeah... the Net really revolutionised the way we work.

Word. You rule at cartoons. Slick linework! As a self-taught cartoonist and illustrator, do you have any tips for an up-and-coming whippersnapper?

Nah. Draw a lot. Recognize that it takes a long time and a lot of work. When you slip, pick up again. That's the bulk of it.

I sure hope so... if I thought I'd been wheel-spinning for 81/2 years I might drown in a bottle.
