Early this year, Humouring the Fates Inc. agreed to create a special treat for Tampa's runaway hit anime convention MetroCon. In honor of their big-name guest, Lupin III creator "Monkey Punch", we threw our resources into creating a short work of original animation that would begin the opening ceremonies of the convention. We at HTF are big Lupin fans, and we really wanted to created something that would excite the fans and show our love.

I think we did allright.

This short film is the result of a great team that worked to create the entire piece from concept to completed edit in less than six weeks. I can't emphasize this heavily enough, I know this is on my personal page, but this isn't just my work... it wouldn't even have been possible without the skill and energy of several people, a few of whom just happen to also be DA members.

So give it up for my homies!

Erin Humiston
Anna Bruno-Stepp
Kevin Delucia

Here's a little FAQ action:

How did you make this/what programs did you use?
This was done traditionally, with paper and pencils. Erin and I drew every frame of every scene by hand, and then scanned each frame into the computer using the RETAS family of animation software. It was processed and colored digitally, then composed by scene and exported as a master footage file, then taken into Final Cut Pro for the final sound and timing edit.

Hey, this is what we do.

You got a lot of credits up there, buddy... what did YOU do, specifically?
I wear a couple hats. Specifically, I wrote the initial draft, storyboarded it and set up the shot list. I keyed and tweened alongside Erin and I think I did most of the cleanups. I redlined and/or colored several scenes, and did a bunch of really annoying backseat editing. Over the last few years I've had to do almost every job along the production line at some point or another.

Can you teach me to do this?
No chance. It takes a LOT of work to learn animation (I'm still learning all the time), but most of it has to be done on your own. I can suggest that Richard Williams book The Animator's Survival Kit is awesome, and Easytoon is not a bad way to just practice rough animation.

I'm sure I'll add more questions later. Feel free to ask 'em!

You used Retas pro too? Awelsome! It's considered to be one of the most popular Programs in Japan's Anime industry. I'm getting to learn about This software myself. I had downloaded each different demo versions of it. How are you with it by the way? I know it take a lot of time to learn retas pro, Even I'm still trying to figure out the functions( It might take more of a teamwork to learn this). But I still think it's really fun to play with. Anyways, great job with the artwork! ^-^

I haven't used it in a little while, but as a compositing program it's one of the best I've ever used.

Yes it is! You and your team did a great job. Keep up the good work. ^_^

Hmm.. I was wondering where did you get that software? Did you used a demo verison of Retas pro? I read that the demo doesn't give much features and I was hoping if I could find Retas pro in public stores somewhere. I know that it's a special program to use and one of the most popular program for Animation schools and Jobs. So I guessing you can only find those things online.

Studio Fates worked with Celsys (the Japanese programmers) on English-language beta-testing and compatibility. It's also how I got into Manga Studio a couple years early.

Wow, Really? That's quite a teamwork. It kinda like becoming part of the company, isn't it? Heheheheh.. But still it would be cool to make a project such as using retas. I getting tons of ideas for an anime story in mind (I might start short though). Plus I'm quite good at drawing( you can also check my gallery).

And Yes, I heard about Manga studio. It's also became popular as well. Plus there's also a Newer program verison that's similar to last manga studio. but with more features. ^-^

Lupin: So hip, he can barely look over his legs. So cool, it's a wonder he's not frozen into place. Maybe that's because he's so hot at the same time, too.

Neat. XD

Thanks! I'm more a fan of either the Monkey Punch original or the Miyazaki incarnations of Lupin himself, and that's only a fraction of what's out there, but when it's good it's very, very good.

Absolutely fantastic.

I've been wanting to try animating a Lupin sequence set to that music for ages. But now I can't because it would never be as cool as this XD

DrSlouch [2007-09-25 20:58:49 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that was incredible, considering you only had six weeks and you guys aren't like, a professional animation studio or anything. How did Monkey Punch react?
I wish I had been there; my first time to Metrocon was the Amano's World thing in October last year, I was rather dissappointed to see that I had missed the year someone like Monkey Punch was there.

Inkthinker In reply to DrSlouch [2007-09-27 05:34:56 +0000 UTC]

We are a professional animation studio. Or at least we like to think so, what with the making commercials and music videos and all that.

So... not THAT incredible.

So far as I could tell, he was very happy with it. I think we're the only American studio to ever attempt something like this with Lupin.

I like Miayazaki's Lupin (both the movie and the TV episodes he directed) and the Monkey Punch comics most... I must admit, I'm not a huge fan of ALL things Lupin, but there's something at the core of it all that's pure genius.

cubs2084 In reply to Inkthinker [2007-05-15 04:10:45 +0000 UTC]

Heh, well yeah I mean in its purest form, Lupin is wonderful. Unfortunately, the quality of the movies and OVAs ranges from wonderful to god-awful. Stupid Japan and letting the license jump around studios.

Inkthinker In reply to cheeny [2007-01-12 04:37:53 +0000 UTC]

Well... you ain't likely been on THOSE bridges, 'cause I just sorta made 'em up... there's no intersection in the area that quite matches that scene, though I think it looks like a bit of a cross between the I-75/I-4 juncture and Malfunction Junction where 275 and I-4 meet.

But yeah, it's for a Tampa Con, and that's the convention center in downtown.

Ok, ok, that was too cool! Loved it! ^^
Unfortunately I've only seen 1 of the movies that Lupin is in, but seeing this just reminds me that I need to be on the lookout for the others!
Very smooth and funny animation, well done!

Eheh, and I just now realise that I'm seeing this about a year after it's been made... but oh well. Better late than never!
Again, good job!
