Description One of several interior illustrations seen in the impending Hero Games Monster Hunter International Employee Handbook, the tabletop RPG and worldbook based on the Monster Hunter series of kickass urban fantasy novels by Larry Correia. Check it out at bigger size with the Download option.

This is one of the few that I did which involved an actual character from the book. Earl Harbinger, MHI chief and head bad-ass, riding alonside a van full of wicked cultists while blasting away at them one-handed with his WW2-era Thompson. I got to choose what sort of motorcycle he would ride... I had the idea that it would be a Harley at first, but Mr. Correia tells me that his bike is never actually brand-named, and so I decided to put Earl on a vintage Indian Army model, to go with his typewriter. And I did my best to get his minotaur-hide bomber jacket right, too.

The purple-robed cultists were a consistent bunch of mooks I put into a couple of the pieces I had, but only these guys get the gold-plated D.Eagle to go with their MAC-10s and RPGs. Probably nicked the whole package from some Libyan terrorists in the 1980s. Great Scott, that's heavy.

PS CS5.5 on the ol scuffy Cintiq 21. Let me know what you think, if you have any suggestions for improving my technique I'm definitely all ears.

I figure Earl would have a Vintage army Indian somewhere, Think Heather would have a Police Bike?

Nice work InkThinker,

Indian Motorcycles from early on to 1954 had stock lefthand throttles ~ so the tommygun could be placed in the righthand.

It was a special order factory option for a righthand throttle like most other brands.

Earl looks the part here.

Best Regards, Doc

Thanks!

In the initial description, the team didn't specify what sort of bike Earl rides, and they let me select the model (presuming I didn't try to put Earl on a sporty rice-rocket). However, they were REALLY specific that Early be firing with his left hand and keeping his right on the throttle... probably because 99% of most bikes work that way.

It was only in poking about for motorcyle references and types that I got the idea that Earl would ride a WW2-era Indian. But at that point the layout had been set up, and I didn't learn about the lefty throttles until after the piece was done. And at any rate, for the sake of good composition it works better to have Earl's arm extended an in clear silhouette, rather than firing across his body with his right hand. Besides, Harbinger's almost certainly ambidextrous, especially with firearms.

So, in an attempt to remain authentic/realistic, we still managed to drop a detail... unless, for some reason, Earl has a model with custom righty throttle, but why? The lefty throttle was partly BECAUSE it left the right hand available, presumably for shooty-bang-bang.

Ah, well, our heart was always in the right place.Β

Awesome stuff. Is this for 6th Edition? I'm still waiting to see what they've tweaked for vehicle combat.

on the other note. GODDAMN it's good to see good art in HERO books. some of the art in the older books was so freakin terrible

Inkthinker In reply to Harrkonen [2013-11-09 09:07:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I think it's 6th edition... I'm not familiar with the HERO system, but the back half of the book starts out by saying that if you have a rules question that the book doesn't answer, refer to HERO 6th.

The book contains all the basic HERO system rules, and expanded rules for gunfights, vehicles and magic. I have no idea what they've tweaked from previous editions, but the MHI Handbook should have the latest stuff.

First book wasn't my favorite, but it got better. MH: Alpha is pretty much all about Earl, and that one is my favorite. If you haven't yet, check out his "GrimNoir" series, I like it even more. It's all Prohibition-Era Pulp Superheroes and Mad Scientists, without the silly spandex and capes. Tons of fun.
