As it had pushed me up into a corner…
Pinned me against the mountainside behind me…
My own words… the ones that I had told all the ones before… flew through my head.
“I am too early”.
“I am someone who will not live for long”.
Well…. Here, before me, stood one of the reasons.
The enormous Terrorbird.
With its monstrous beak, its sharp talons and its forward-facing eyes.
The “deadliest ostrich” I had ever seen.

- Hello lunch!

I had laughed.
No questions about my species.
Or my relative difference to species of this time.
I was smaller, weaker, slower than it.
That was enough.
“Hello lunch” … it was almost cute.

- Hello there.

It had smiled at me.
The smile of a shark.
I had found myself smiling back.

- Excuse me… before you eat me… you wouldn’t happen to know what year it is?
- It is the year 3421034 BCE.

Ah yes.
That would do it.

Perhaps, now at last this stupid dream might stop.
Maybe now at last I might wake up, and be done with this seemingly endless chain, night after night after night.

“The chain couldn’t exist if you didn’t know of all these species.”
I groaned.
Yeah, well… short of a lobotomy, there was precious little I could do about that now…
