Witch (rus. ведьма (ved'ma) — witch) — is undoubtedly one of the most popular folklore characters throughout the world, whose main traits are similar in majority of the cultures. As we all know from the folklore, witches are women, who have concluded an alliance with evil spirits or inherited their magical gift from the ancestors. However, any unsociable or strange-behaving women could be easily considered as witches.
According to the slavic beliefs, vedmas looked just like every common woman (some fables and legends, however, mention tail or small horns, which were diligently hidden*) with a hard look and unnaturally swollen and red eyelids. Witches always avoided eye contact, because it was believed that you could see an inverted reflection of the man in their pupils. It was thought that the sight of the Kupala fire (one of the main holidays in pagan Rus') was especially painful for witches and was considered the best way to spot the wicked ones. To avoid the inheritance of the magic power, vedmas were buried with their face down.

* — Those details were most likely added to the character after the сhristianization of Rus, when the most of the pagan folklore characters were given the traits of christian demons. I have to mention, though, that the image of ved'ma in slavic culture is much more positive compared to the european "colleagues" (once again, because of parallel coexistence of сhristianity and pagan beliefs).

Ведьма — пожалуй, один из самых популярных персонажей в мировом фольклоре, и ее основные черты остаются неизменными в различных культурах. Считалось, что ведьмой могла стать женщина, заключившая союз с нечистой силой или перенявшая колдовской дар по наследству. Впрочем, ведьмой могли счесть любую одинокую и необычную особу. Согласно поверьям славян, выглядели они как самые обычные женщины (лишь иногда в описаниях упоминаются рога или хвост) с тяжелым взглядом и неестественно опухшими и красными веками. Ведьмы никогда не смотрели в глаза, так как, если верить быличкам, в их зрачках можно увидеть перевернутое отражение человека. Славяне верили, что вид купальских огней мучителен для ведьм, и это наиболее действенный способ их распознавания. Уничтожить же колдовскую силу окончательно можно было, похоронив ведьму лицом вниз.
