Description This poster is the first in my series TRIUMPHS IN TECHNOLOGY. This particular piece highlights the Pennsy T1 - the fastest production steam locomotive in history. This impressive locomotive was capable of hauling 16 loaded passenger cars at a mind-blowing 135mph! The locomotive was one of a series of speed locomotives designed by the famed Raymond Lowey.

This piece was illustrated using: Adobe Illustrator.

Happy 120th Birthday, MonsieurΒ Lowey!

Except for the fact of forward valve-port shockwaves setting up in the back-cylinder feed pipes causing the rear units to temporarily loose power thus letting the front units to loose traction. They required the hand of a skilled 'throttle jock' to minimize this problem, and it was not unusual to have them cruise along at 110+mph with a full train behind.

Are you a fan of art deco? Or trains? Both?

A little of both! Trains first and foremost, but I can appreciate the appeal of the other

And the T1 is just such a spectacular engineering statement, even if it was too little too late for steam when it arrived.

Tragic how the entire shark-nose series arrived way too late: The T1, the Q1, Q2. The Q2 was amongst the most powerful engines in history

Aye, it is a shame! I think all countries and companys have "Might have been" engines that had great potential but either weren't built or arrive to late...

I didn't know that much about the Qs' until recently, but they certainly seem to be imposing creatures. Would have loved to have seen one in action!

Don't think T1's ever went to New York and Philly. Curves were and are too tight for them and they were mainly a Lines West engine, meaning west of Pittsburgh.

both. but if i'd really had to choose... trains!
and the T1 looks deliciously steampunk, that too.
