look at design as quadrants. Start with holes on perimeter, number top left 1-8, turn adjacent corner and repeat 1-8. String goes from hole one to hole one on adjacent line, comes round back out of hole 2 down to hole 2, and so on. Repeat on all 4 corners. Not sure about the pattern in center, but it also is one color at a time in holes punched equal distance in a cross for black shape (repeated at different angle for the gray string). String is strung one quadrant at a time in similar pattern, just hard to follow it)

I'm going to say between 45 mins-3 hours. I had to draw lines and poke holes (before actually threading the needle and all) and I'm very obsessive over drawing straight lines and getting perfect 90degree corners so that took a good amount of time in itself. Lucky for me it's not as complicated as it looks. A bit hard to explain, much easier to follow if you see someone doing it.
