If you are looking for something to paint on that is cheaper than canvas try luan plywood or tempered masonite. You can buy it in 4' x 8' x 1/4" sheets for around sixteen dollars. Most places that sell it will cut it up for you. The local collage's art students buy it all the time where I work.

Canvas is much cheaper than that. I can get a pack of two pre-treated canvases for around $10. I WOULD like to try painting on different materials, though! That's always fun.
