Ah, the Delta Quadrant, where things were supposed to be different. Where things were supposed to be new and fresh. Instead, the first major villains we got were the Kazon, who were, to be generous, just discount Klingons. I found their design overcomplicated to the point of being silly and not at all threatening. The first challenge to myself was to make them menacing. Since they're highly territorial, aggressively patriarchal, and had giant manes of hair, I pushed them in the direction of a kind of armored, alien lion. Taking this a bit further, I think it could have been interesting for this lion-like trait to bleed into their society, where a single dominant male had a pack of lioness warriors at his command. It could have been an even more stark of contrast to Janeway, and further differentiated them from the Klingons.
