Restless at the thought of the end in sight, Mauk and Fahari raced on, towards Skullhead (Mauk made a note to come back and figure out why it was named this), to Antler Ridge (more boringly named, but the elk were cool), and through the mountain range. The pair sighted some odd and new things (for neither had travelled up North this far) and traded stories as they travelled and during breaks. The sights were horrifically scenic, and both, although in good spirits, were affected by the ongrowing cold. Toes grew more painful, and ears numbed. Neither seemed keen on rest either though; the excitement palpable between them and the small group of suka who had prevailed the previous parts of the race as they headed towards the large open field as described by Czar. There was an old tree in the middle of the field, and lo and behold, a blue flag fluttered in the breeze, as told and described by the Verazian.
With the constant snowfall, any markings or tracks left behind by the suka who hid the flags were erased. This, in turn, left the entire group all clueless on where to start searching. Mauk let out a small sigh and took lead, marching up to the large twisted tree, looking for scuffs or dents in the snow with Fahari close behind. He didn’t find any.
Mauk let out a loud sigh, and grumbled. “We better get digging then.” He began to dig at the base of the tree until he hit dirt, unsurprised when no blue flag was uncovered. “Figures they don’t make it easy.” He paused and looked up at Fahari. “ I’ll push aside the snow for your to search, if that’ll help?”
Fahari eyed the other suka aimlessly digging out in the field. “Honey, I think we may as well just pray to the Sheriffs and dig randomly. I don’t think use working together will get us far this time.“
Amused and understanding, Mauk began shoveling aside ploughs of snow with his head and paws, clearing a large area before moving to a different area after he found nothing, leaving Fahari to do his own thing. This repeated for quite awhile, with Mauk digging out large swathes of snow before moving onto the next location with a grumble and a sigh. Mauk was ready to call horseshite with the ‘hidden’ flags before he spotted something vibrantly blue in the snow. Excited and the earlier annoyance forgotten, he grabbed the blue cloth and climbed out of the fifth large hole he had dug that day, excited to show Fahari- only to see that he had found one too. Tying it around his neck alongside the other flags he had collected, Mauk tilted his head towards Fahari’s flag and the churned up mud the pair had made. “Let’s get out of this mess, eh Pumpkin?”
Without waiting for an answer, Mauk bounded off towards the top of the hill; where some of the luckier suka who had found their flags quickly were igniting another bonfire. Eager to warm up and feast, Fahari shook most of the snow off of his coat before following behind Mauk, ready for the end of the race.
