Mauk hadn’t paid attention for most of the first quarter of the race -there were too many people to talk to and enjoy, but the crowd had thinned out considerably at this point, and suka were getting competitive. Meeting up with Fahari by the bonfire was a large coincidence, Mauk had thought everyone had gone ahead, but many seemed to want to rest and sleep by the warm embers of the bonfire. As the large lion-esque suka gave his spiel on the second part of the race, Mauk looked around for anyone he knew besides Fahari - there were none.
Jostled by a prod from Fahari, Mauk looked over to him gesturing at Fasa with annoyance. “Pay fucking attention.” He hissed.
Mauk shifted in the snow, annoyed. “I am.” (He wasn’t.) Located further away from Fasa, Mauk only made out a few words through the howling wind - “...worthy… Skyfold… cross… river… purple flag…”
Getting up with a heave, Mauk shook out his thick (and now flattened) coat before trotting up closer out of curiosity. Only a madman would dare to actually swim in the river, especially in this weather - meaning that whoever got to the river first would have an advantage in crossing, and first pick of a solution. Mauk listened to the rest of Fasa’s speech; from the flag of Aisug to the Diamond river, collect the red flag and meet back up at the Golden Front Coast. Got it. And with a nod to Fahari, Mauk darted off as soon as Fasa howled, heading quickly down to the freezing river.
Reaching the river took a while - the snow was thick and deep and although Mauk could hear the river, he kept falling into snow drifts, slowing him down. When he finally found the river, Fahari was already there, dragging a large log and pushing it into the water. “Care to help?”
With a roll of his eyes, Mauk leaned into the log, sliding it along the snow until most of it was in the water. “Go, I’ll follow behind you.” He took a few steps away from the log, amused. “I won’t try anything funny darling, I promise.”
“As if I’d let you.” Fahari cautiously stepped onto the log, stabilizing before slowly walking across. Mauk pretended to go and shove the long, and Fahari yelped and quickly jumped off of the log onto the snowy bank on the other side of the river. “Fuck you!” Mauk cackled, stepping onto the log after him. Heavier than Fahari, the log creaked and Mauk let out a huff as he trotted across, jumping onto the bank in a much more dignified fashion than Fahari. The heavy kick that Mauk gave the already cracked log splintered it, and after a few seconds of fighting the current, it drifted down the river and sank.
Looking behind him, Mauk spied a few other suka emerging from the tree line - it was a good thing the log had broke when it did; he wanted to get a lead on them and hindering their way across seemed like the best way to do so.
The purple flags they sought fluttered in the breeze, tied to stakes that seemed to be shoved into the ground. Quickly snagging one and wrapping it around his other flags, Mauk handed Fahari a second. “Let’s go before the rest catch up.”
