“Are we there yet?” Bobby shouted to his parents from the backseat of the van, annoying his older sister Jenny next to him. “I am getting tired of being in this car and driving all day.” Bobby whined for the what seemed like the the millionth time today.
Jenny just sighed as she looked out the window of the car to the now almost abandoned suburban town around them, despite how much he annoyed her she still had a responsibility to protect him. Bobby was young, just about to start high school before this New Korean Invasion began, and with him being so young their parents John and Debra didn’t think he should be exposed to all this New Korea stuff. Surely the so called “Colonization” would be over in a week or two once the government could respond, and life would go back to normal and Bobby would still have a normal life, but as the weeks turned to months and the border of New Korea moving further south the Smith family knew that they had to do something and began following what all their neighbors did and leave.
It had only been a day, and it was clear that John and Debra weren’t prepared for this. They wanted a simple life of owning a house and raising their kids, not a life of running from an invading country. Jenny knew that she could take care of herself if needed but Bobby was too sheltered if something were to happen their parents he couldn’t handle it himself, so she felt a need to stay with him and protect him.
“Don’t worry Bobby we are going to stop to get some gas. You can get out there and stretch your legs.” Debra said, her voice shaking barely able to contain her worry. “Just don’t stray too far from your sister.”
“Awesome I want to get something to drink, I am so thirsty.” They pulled their van into in almost completely abandoned gas station. Bobby opened the door, jumped out and slammed the door shut on her teasing her before running into the gas station alone to look for snacks and a drink.
“Wait Bobby!” Debra shouted out worried about her son.
“Mom don’t worry it's surely abandoned by now, he will be fine. You just have to let him be himself.” Jenny assured her mother. Jenny really had her doubts that New Korea would be any threat to them here. The border was still hundreds of miles away, why would they even be here.
But Jenny was wrong. Sitting behind the counter in the seemingly abandoned gas station was the newly minted Kim Na-Eun. She smiled as the young boy walked into the store, completely alone and naive. He was a perfect target for Colonization. She couldn’t hold in her excitement, this would be her first Colonization and she is so happy to be sharing the joy of New Korea with others.
She peered out the window and her grin widened as she saw the van outside. A sense of Deja Vu went through her mind, as if she has seen that van before. A memory from her previous life as Tyler appeared in her head, of that van fleeing from the Glory of New Korea. ‘Excellent Three more people to colonize, and they were cowards as well. I get to teach to them the glory of New Korea.’ She thinks to herself and giggles at the thought.
Bobby was at the soda machine desperately trying to get it to work, but it has unplugged been since the store was abandoned. He turned around dejectedly and began to walk back out to the van when he ran headfirst into someone.
“Jenny I told you not surprise me like that” He looked up expecting to find his sister, but instead found a beautiful Asian woman looking down at him.
“Hey little guy,” She said with a thick Korean accent and smiled down at him. She was so excited for her first Colonization. “I noticed you were wanting a drink. Unfortunately all those machines have been turned off since no one is around here anymore.” She made an exaggerated frowning face. “You looked so thirsty, so I decided to let you have some of my secret stash for free. Its really good, and I know you will like it. Just don’t tell anyone I gave it to you for free” She bent down and handed him a bottle of flavored water and giggles.
Bobby was startled and not sure what to do. “My parents said to not take anything from strangers, especially from Koreans.” He gulped, he really didn’t know if this lady was Korean or not but his parents made it very clear that he shouldn’t trust them.
“Well that is rude, saying that to someone who offered you her very delicious drink for free.” Na-Eun said once again with an exaggerated frowning expression. Truth be told Bobby thought this lady seemed nice, and he really had no reason to not trust Koreans. Besides Jenny and his parents weren’t around he might as well take it. He took the bottle from Na-Eun sheepishly and began drinking it nervously. Although he felt nervous about breaking the rules, it felt good to have freedom, a feeling he hasn't felt before, a strange tingling feeling throughout his body.
“I am so glad you tried my drink!” Na-Eun shouted excitedly in Korean, a language that Bobby could now understand “I know you will like it!”
Moments later Jenny finally made it into the gas station. She took a glance around to try to find Bobby but only saw two Korean ladies.
“I am so glad you enjoyed your drink Bo-Young!” Na-Eun muttered in english before switching back into Korean. The new Bo-Young was still awe of her new body. Moments before she was a white preteen boy, but she is now a Korean girl. The same chemicals and hormones that Colonized her had the effect of aging her physically several years to have the body of a teenage girl. Bo-Young can’t help but smile, both for the pleasant sensation of her new korean body, but also for the act of rebellion she finally carried out against her parents.
“Bobby are you here!” Jenny still couldn’t find him but her shouting now caught the attention of the two Korean Girls.
“I am over here, sis” Bo-Young shouted trying and failing to find the words in english and instead shouting in Korean. Na-Eun just smiled, ‘this will be too easy’ she thought to herself.
“I just saw him, let me go find him for you.” Na-Eun smiled and handed her a bottle of the vitamin water. “In the meantime enjoy this drink.”
“Thank you very much” Jenny was parched from the long trip in the car with Bobby and was grateful for the drink. Unlike her parents or Bobby, she wasn’t afraid of the Koreans at all. She began drinking. Bo-Young was still talking excitedly in Korean, while strangely Na-Eun didn’t move at all to get Bobby, she just stood there grinning. Suddenly Jenny felt the same tingling sensation in her body as the serum began to take effect.
Soon the excited mumblings of Bo-Young became understandable to her. “Sister it is me, Bobby...err Bo-Young. I am so excited you tried Na-Eun’s it made me feel so good about rebelling against the parents. This is a new life for me and I will make the most of it and not be so sheltered and immature anymore”
Jenny couldn’t believe what she was hearing and seeing. Not only could she understand Korean, but apparently her Brother was a Korean girl now. At Least Bo-Young seemed much more tolerable and far less annoying. Jenny could learn to deal with this.
“I am so glad Na-Eun gave you the same chance at life as me. Lets thank New Korea for giving us this new chance on life. Hail New Korea!”
Jenny hadn’t quite caught on to all the changes happening to her, but she noticed too late. The bottle was already empty and she was completely transformed in Ji-Eun. She thought she would be more upset by this, but it felt strangely good, like this body was even more right for her.
“Yes Bo-Young it is very great of New Korea to give us this chance! Hail New Korea!” She shouted before hugging both Bo-Young and Na-Eun.
Na-Eun meanwhile couldn’t believe how successful her first day of colonization has been.
