It is December and strangely even in New Korea the holiday spirit could be felt. The girls of New Korea newest idol group, U-Girls, prepare for their performance at the first annual New Korea Christmas Celebration. A new event put on for the first celebration of Christmas since New Korea took over. An event that will celebrate the combination of Korean and American culture, much like how New Korea is a mix of Korea and America.
The New Korean government tolerates a small amount of activities from before colonization. Although the colonization process is very effective at converting all the Americans physically, in fact there have been no reported cases of anyone unaffected by the changes. The mental changes are another matter. Mental programming is a very difficult field of study and Korean scientists have not completely mastered it yet, resulting in various stages of resistance to the changes. The specific kind of resistance varies from person to person depending on their experiences, genetics, or even just their personality.
Due to the scale of colonization there are bound to be a handful of people completely resilient to the mental changes, and thousands more that can remember their old lives under certain circumstances. And most people can remember important parts of their lives all the time such as old friends, or important events in their lives. These memories fades over time as they adjust to their new lives, but in the months and years following colonization of a new region these memories tend to cause upheaval as their old memories are triggered and overcome their mental changes.
Naturally the holiday season is the worst time of year for this. The citizens of New Korea have had their lives drastically changed, and the time of year will remind them of their friends and families. The New Korean government had a generous solution. Instead of immediately replacing all American culture with the superior Korean culture, the government allows certain aspects of the previous culture to carry on such has holiday customs. At least until the new citizens are fully assimilated in to New Korea.
Thus New Korea prepares for Christmas. Citizens dress up, buy gifts, decorate their houses, and come together like nothing has changed, despite the fact that they and everyone their know are now Korean girls. In fact now that everyone's the same coming together to celebrate is easier than ever.
For example the girls U-Girls would have never gotten together to celebrate Christmas in their past lives. Some were rich like the former CEO who would not share give any of his workers time to celebrate the holidays; some were poor like a homeless man who couldn’t afford to celebrate. One of them was atheist college student, who constantly blew off requests to celebrate with more religious people on campus who asked him to celebrate. Another was religious fundamentalist who would protest in anger anytime he heard someone say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas.
Of course none of them could have come together to celebrate before, but the greatness of New Korea brought them together. They could barely remember who they were before, or why they couldn’t get along. They were all the same now, and could happily celebrate the holidays without fighting. And New Korea was stronger for it.
