Description Ser Barristan Selmy, a true knight from the A Song Of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. I really like him, but then again, what's not to like? He's like the light-canonic reverse of Sandor Clegane.

I've seen Selmy depicted as an enraged, long-bearded bulky man, but to me he is almost apostle-looking: tall, lean, wiry, elegant and somber.

And no long hair. Only vain knights would wear it long! It would get on the way all the time.

Reference used: Max Von Sydow as Dr. Kynes in Dune. However, as in movies, any resemblance with reality is coincidental, haha. It might as well have been your grandpa.

Nice drawing. Sucks, what the show had done to him.

Hello my name is Brandon and I run a small youtube channel where i post ASOIAF content. I was wondering if I could use your photo of Ser Barristan in one of my videos? If so, I would be happy to credit you and post a link to your deviantart page in the description.

I am glad you like it. I am just sorry my technique is never up to my mental images, haha. Selmy is one of my favorite characters, and if he hadn't got kicked out, I think he would have quit anyway. A man like him would not want to be part of what Cersei was cooking, so I think it was even better for him to end up where he is (haven't read ADwD yet so I don't know if there have been any changes)

A friend of mine compared him to Batman's Detective Gordon, but I think Gordon is actually more complex than Selmy. Selmy doesn't believe in by all means necessary; knighthood is the both the means and the end itself. Gordon, on the other hand, is aware of the corruption surrounding him, but deals with it one day at a time and never forgets what the main goal is. They're both honorable in their own way, but I still prefer Gordon (if I had to choose, that is!)

i agree with your interepretation....i think Ser Barristan would be one of the last of the Great true Knight..gallant and honorable...too bad he was kicked out and ended up sooo far away...

Ser Barristan is awesome. Also, he's a bit like Sarastro and Gurnemanz - with a warrior side.

the only true knight, and you've captured him as I imagine him. wise, noble and a focus loyalist to the end. great job!

Thank you very much! I like him very much. And you are absolutely right: he is the only true knight in Westeros. Somehow is fitting that his integrity would be almost a joke in Martin's hiperrealistic society. In a way, that's why I think the saga is so great: in any other fantasy book, being a great knight like Selmy would mean nothing bad would ever happen to him. In Martin's world, no one is spared of anything. Great men fall in unfair circumstances and rats succeed.

Not sure if you have, you should put your ASOIAF work into the WINTERFELL group.

I´ve thought of it. But every time I look at the group´s gallery and compare it to my own, I feel depressed haha. I really need to improve before I can post something I am actually proud of. Thank you for your kindness anyway!

It's a matter of opinion. I really do think yours can stand on its own else I would not have said. The choice is yours. What will it be? Man or mouse? hehehee

Excuse the weird question, but...are you called Elisa, by any chance? I used to talk to her in a ASOIAF forum and you remind me of her, so I thought that maybe it´s you, haha. If you are not her excuse my rambling

Es él! Muy bien dibujado y conseguido!

Que tal te llevas con el Photoshop? Has utilizado capas?

InTheArmsOfUndertow In reply to Bodach [2009-11-24 23:14:53 +0000 UTC]

Gracias!

That was my goal indeed! I'm glad you like it. Since ser Barristan is not one of my big-assed princesses, I thought he would not get any favorites, but now I see I should never understimate the power of well-aged honorable warriors!

Very nice! He looks, knightly. XD No really, it's awesome.

So uh, where's my beautiful Drogo? Is he rotting somewhere under your bed? BECAUSE HE'S DEAD?! HUH!?

..Oh, the pains of reading books so behind others...

*cries herself to sleep while dreaming of a more Mongolian tomorrow..*
