Description My IZ DVD set has an "Extras" setting which allows you to have the episodes play with Irken subtitles. I've seen an Irken/English letter translator online which has become commonly accepted. You can see an example of it here: [link]

I was bored today, so I turned on the subtitles and checked to see if the alphabet translator was correct. To my surprise, it wasn't (in comparison to the subtitles, anyway). That made me curious to see if the words were actually anything or just random symbols pasted on the screen. So as an excuse to watch a few episodes again, I took key sentences and copied the subtitles and wrote the meaning below them.

Whoever did the subtitles was very lazy. There were missing letters all over the place and many words didn't have spaces between them. But despite this it was clear that someone had typed it up in English very quickly using an Irken font.

What surprised me most is the missing letters. I went through several episodes and every time someone said "Zim" or "Gaz" the subtitles just said "im" or "ga". What a stupid letter to be missing. It's only in two of the main characters' names. The missing V was made clear by things like "Vort" and "Massive". I hunted for the Y forever. I checked a lot of "hey"s and "why"s and even a few "happy"s to no avail.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This just goes to show I have no life. But that's okay, because this was a fun puzzle. I don't suspect anyone will use it since the other alphabet is already popular, but I thought it might interest some people to know that the "official" Irken alphabet is missing things like Z. lol.
Thank you for actually discovering the true Irken alphabet. Others are fake.
im deaf so the fact that thier were useless irken subtitles really pissed me off considering i needed english subtitles. I have a set of the series with captions but 3 episodes do not have them at all, which is confusing because i have watched the entire series on tv and there were captions for those episodes
... Interesting...
Well... some alphabets don't include certain letters in them... this is very interesting...
I found another person who went in their dvd and only found letters A-U... thank you for at least finding W and X... (hah! Now I can spell my Irken's name correctly... xDD)
I may stick to the original, but you can bet I'll consider using this one every now and then... xD
Don't go getting it tattooed on you. W and H are the same symbol on here. Don't know if that makes it any less accurate but just saying.
Huh, totally odd. I'm gonna use the other one though. It has more support in the fanbase and has all the letters... It's nice to know I'm wrong though.
The one used by the fanbase is the correct one, as far as I'm concerned. The show itself doesn't have a code to it; they're just random symbols without meaning. This one is just something which was thrown together for some of the DVDs.
Ya know I wonder if they just did the missing letters to make it more like it's own language... The lack of spaces could be just a quick way to confuse people trying to decode it too... just theories . Thank you for posting this because I really want to stay true to the show. I'm creating an RPG character based on GIR and I want to do any writing on my things in irken
I'm seriously no the only person who has done this and noticed it? That's a win.
A little correction:
'U' symbol - upper-case 'O'
'W' symbol - upper-case 'H'
'X' symbol - lower-case 'E'
The letters 'U' through 'Z' are nonexistent.
There are both lower- and upper-case letters.
You did a very good job, though, ha ha.
I still don't know where the "commonly accepted" version of the Irken alphabet originated. ':-I
lol. Might I suggest fill-in-the-blank notes? That way it's not worth a grade, but still just as WTF-inducing.
