This doesn't have as many comments as I'd thought it would have, especially with it being on EqD and all.

I love watercolor and ponies, and must say, you have done a wonderful job. I am astounded by your lighting, sky, and color layering. I've been learning and practicing watercolors lately myself, and have a few questions for you if you're up for it.

-Are you doing wet-on-wet, or is it a mixture of techniques? Do you do it piece by piece, or do you wet it all at once?

-What pen do you use for your inking? I'm assuming it's put in before the watercolor itself. Does it go on smooth?

-What brushes, paint brand/type, paper and type do you use?

-How long did this take to do, minus time for drying, if you did so?

And many, many others, but primarily those.

Hi!

I use different techniques, typically wet on wet and wet on dry. First couple of layers, it's wet on wet. Later, when it's time to add fine details, it's wet on dry, but not when it's too dry. I work section by section, allowing one area to dry a little while I paint in another area, and I go back and forth.

You are correct, I inked it before painting it. For this piece, I used Rotring Isograph, .18. This pen deals pretty well on the rough surface of watercolor paper. The paper I use is Canson, cold press.

For brushes, I use generic Artist's Loft brushes, in varying degrees of fineness; and I have one Princeton Neptune, No. 8. I'm saving up money to buy more high quality brushes, but Artist's Loft brushes are serving me well for now.

Not including the time it took me to draft, draw and ink, it took me three days to paint it. Overall, it took me four days, obviously because I had other things to do.

Thanks for your questions, I was really happy to answer them!

Awesome, thanks for answering!

I'm always interested in other peoples' techniques - it can be really fun to watch someone paint something, especially with commentary.

I'm always afraid of leaving it to dry completely as I'm uncertain if I'll be able to either mix my colors the same way and to get the same level of wetness as previously done. So much comes down to applying the watercolor at certain levels of wetness, it's insane, though I'm probably just making it difficult for myself, too. When I work on something, I usually just marathon it until it's done and use up all my extra time for that day/night.

Thanks very much for your time

Thanks! They were inspired by designs from Hayao Miyazaki's films.

Beautiful. I just love watercolors and you've captured my two favorite background ponies with them. Lyrabon forever.

I love Lyra's shoes/sandals and the lyre design.
