Description I think I mentioned a mural commission a little while back in my journal, well I have gone through a couple of drafts and this one I think is starting to work. There are most definately going to be issues come up such as proportion of the space, shifting of pictorial space and compositional emphasis and all that, and before I get myself stuck in a rut I would like to ask for some feedback.

This is going to be in a church, behind the altar, floor to ceiling and centered on a rather wide wall. Most people in the church will be able to see it from just below the middle on up from the pews. It is meant to break up the monotony of that wall and create a focal point of meditation and reflection, and the composition should draw the eyes generally downward to the altar. The pastor requested a landscape.

I've been looking at a lot of Italian landscapes, Chinese landscapes, and a certain few paintings of Casper David Frederic, but oh yes I will be doing lots more looking and studying.

Gorgeously colored and stylized. I love the setting. Great technique. The trees are beautifully rendered.

Wow. That's impressive! Love the colours and I think it's very suitable to be placed in a church. It is really relaxing and the image really makes you think of hope and of the Promised Land. We had a picture behind the altar too in our church. A huge and classic one depicting Promised Land (Heaven). They've replaced it now...guess they thought it was kind of old fashioned but I liked it. Like yours better though

Thank you very much I am still working on the painting, it looks a bit different now.
It's too bad that they took away the painting in your church of the Promised land. I like old fashoned as well. What have they replaced it with?

These are some photos from our church...Hope you'll figure it out. They've replaced it with a verse: Jesus Light of the world(Isus Lumina lumii)

Ah I see. Yeah, not that the phrase isn't good, but I would miss the painting too.

This watercolor really suits you The atmospheric perspective is quite nice. I'm a little surprised you didn't work a big cross into the design, something subtle using changes in lighting or tone. Compositionally, I'd probably like to see the lake more off to one side, but that's quibbling. I can tell you're looking at landscapes to inform your work. Nice study! Thanks for sharing.

hehe, the the Crucifix has to be a statue, that's what my pastor said. I remember him saying it was church liturgy. So it's most likely going to be suspended from the ceiling, at least that's where we are right now. I have the help of an engineer from the parish for figuring out all the practical stuff.

I am debating whether or not to have the lake in the center or off to the side. I'm working through some concepts and haven't yet made up my mind.

Thanks!
