Vampires feared the Daywalker. Not because she had the ability to raid their lairs during the day, but rather because she chose not to. She hunted them at night.

From the skyscraping towers of wealthy vampire elders, to the filthy lairs of the Nosferatu, she was indiscriminate in her method of justice.

According to the Daywalker, there was just one penalty for vampirism: death.

MORE INFORMATION ON NOSFERATU

Each vampire was slightly weaker than the one that sired them - one more generation removed from the unknown progenitor of their species. This gradual dilution of vampirism was so negligible that it had gone unnoticed for centuries. That was, until the Nosferatu appeared.

They were weaker than the average vampire, and had more monstrous features. They also acted more like feral animals than thinking, intelligent beings. At least, that was what "true" vampires thought of them.

The Coven of the Old World, the oldest organisation of vampires in history, soon discovered that those of higher generations were more likely to sire inferior specimens, such as the Nosferatu. All vampires of the Thirteenth Generation or higher were outright banned from siring others.

While such a decree might have carried weight in the Middle Ages, it made little difference in the present. The Coven was a withered shadow of its former glory, with only one fifth of all vampires following its ancient rules and traditions. The others, particularly those in the New World, ignored or outright opposed its once monolithic doctrine.

Besides, the Nosferatu multiplied like rats, quickly infesting the warrens beneath the cities of humanity. They were a blight on the vampire species, and a tangible reminder of its finite existence.
