I took this to have a few different meanings.
One, the space explorer seeks to find new life on another planet - first to discover a new world, but then his or her human-ness rears up and perhaps just wants to find something alive to consume.
("consume" having its own set of various meanings)
Two, the space soldier's existence lacks validation while in that suit of protection as they rest in a near fetal position wishing things were off the clock and back to normal.
