All stages in creating an artwork are important, but for me the initial idea and design are the key to the whole picture. Here you see on the left my rough sketch for my new "Copperwing" artwork. The sketch looks awful but helps me quickly put on paper what is in my mind. The design and the way the figures interact, and the wings echoing each other's shapes. is symbolic of the relationship between them. Once this is established and I know what I'm aiming for I did a greyscale tonal value image. Then finally I added the details and colours.You can see the full art here

"The sketch looks awful but helps me quickly put on paper what is in my mind". The sketch is awful? Are you mad? I think it's a good way to have a guidance on the final design. I believe is amazing nonetheless. And the final result is so sweet.

weirdly enough, my fav. improvement from 2 to 3 is giving the tail a corkscrew.. instantly 10x more dynamic

The greyscale is just as beautiful as the colour.. save for obviously the colours
