only half the planet can see the moon at this time, and only a quarter of it would consider it "full" as opposed to "almost full"

Oh yes I know that film, but I've never seen it because when it came out the audience response in China was not too great. I think many people criticized the weak plot of the film, and by that point Chinese audience have become very used to grand historical dramas with nice costumes.
I like what you said about bringing up a righteous person in difficult times, there's sure to be moral lessons learned there and it makes great drama. Though I guess I'll need to watch the film to better understand your point!
I only watched one film by Chen Kaige, which is "Farewell My Concubine," it's a great film. Yet even with "Farewell My Concubine," I don't think Chen is a particularly good storyteller, the film is great primarily because (I think) the performance by the two leading actors, Gong Li and Leslie Cheung, is truly great.

Yes, this story, perhaps, deserves more careful direction. Some storylines seem to have been lost. I would, for example, pay more attention to the General (as we translated his title) with a scar, he's so beautiful and romantic))
I will try to find this film "Farewell My Concubine" and see, it is interesting

I got back from class earlier and watched "The Orphan of Zhao," it's better than I expected, not mushy like so many other Chinese historical dramas, only the pace is too slow and it feels to be dragging, the drama is dilluted and the story can use a little more depth.
Yes the general is a romantic character, handsome, smouldering, a loyal friend, and apparently he doesn't age you're right his storyline is too thin, he just randomly pops up, we don't know what he's doing for the rest of his time. I think there's probably the question of whether the actor who plays the general is capable of carrying a more complex storyline, because he's known for being a very good-looking man but sometimes ridiculed for not having adequate acting skills. Some Chinese audiences ironically and mischievously calls him "China's best comedic actor," because sometimes his effort to appear serious and heroic in films amounts to a somewhat comic effect, due to his unsatisfactory acting skills. But he's actually ok in this film, it's a relief
I think the emotional core of this film is Ge You's character Chen Ying (who brought up the orphan.) There's a famous Chinese saying "君子报仇十年不晚," which means for a person biding his time to complete vengence, even waiting for ten years is not too late. It's about foreberance, patience, enduring to the utmost to accomplish your goal. And yes as you said, it's a Bildungsroman, but very different from the individualism of Hollywood, because the orphan and everyone else in the film are just pieces in a grand board game.

Thank you for watching this film, I am very interested to know your opinion.
It's funny information about this actor. Yes, it happens it's good that sometimes the film Director copes with it)
I really liked what the interiors, houses, courtyards were in this film - it was all very beautiful, noble. Also interesting was the presence of many small household items.
Yes, at some point I began to think that the film is too slow, but then something happened and I again became interested)
I am interested to think how this story could be written, for example, Dostoevsky or Tolstoy, Dickens, Hugo, someone from Western writers, in the Western manner. Shakespeare treated Hamlet much easier))

Mooroflife In reply to Irsanna [2018-09-28 15:52:03 +0000 UTC]
yes I also really like the interior of houses and the courtyards in the film. The time of the story was roughly 500 BC, personally I always thought that was the time when people had the best aesthetic taste. China was invaded by nomadic people from the north countless times in history and several times conquered, and the nomadic people brought in their own elements to clothing and architectural style and interior decorations, making everything on the whole more and more elaborate, extravagant, gaudy and flashy, losing the noble simplicity and elegance of ancient times. By the time of Qing Dynasty, people's clothes were downright ugly. (I don't know if I'm beginning to sound racist...)
I think you would also like the TV series Lang Ya Bang, or "Nirvana in Fire" which is its English translation. It's a very popular and acclaimed historical drama series in China, the director paid a lot of attention to architecture, interior decorations and scenery. And the leading actor in this is also very handsome, plus he can act
I think Dickens would probably pay much more attention to the orphan. Tolstoy would spill all the mental processes and inner thoughts and motivations of every major character. Don't know if Dostoevsky would make the orphan epileptic...I'm just spitballing here.

well I'm relieved you don't think it's racism and thanks for the recommendation!
The moment in the film you mentioned when they say: "we were defeated", do you mean toward the very end what Chen Ying said when the orphan was fighting the big boss? I think the story of this film is so legendary very much because Chen Ying is such a gambler.
It just occurred to me there's something I want to ask you, have you ever watched the 2003 Russian TV series 'The Idiot," adapted from Dostoevsky's novel? If you have, how do you like it? I really like it personally, although from what I learned from the YouTube comments by Russian audiences, many of them seem to think the series is more commercial than artistic.
Also I'll reply to your comment on Turgon and Idril hopefully tomorrow or the day after that, I've been really busy these few days, yet somehow I managed to watch a bunch of movies...

this is the scene where the General and Chen Ying tell the boy who he is. And the boy protests and says that he will still follow his attachment to the patron. When the General takes the crossbow and says: Well, then I will do it. That is, all these years do not outweigh that the boy can have his own will.
No, I didn't watch that series. I saw maybe just very small fragments. Probably, my attitude to this series is similar to your first reaction when I wrote to you that I watched this movie " Orphan" I prefer old Soviet classics, old Soviet films seem to me more qualitative and talented. If we talk about the barbarian invasions, I think what happened to my country after the collapse of the USSR is very similar to the invasion of barbarians, even if they were internal barbarians. Now my country seems to be occupied by people of very low moral and spiritual culture. The TV series "the Idiot" 2003, I think maybe not a bad product, maybe even very good, in order to get acquainted with Dostoevsky and Russia, but it's still more simplistic, by comparison as did the films in the USSR. And our modern cinema is not something I will spend my time on, except for certain names.

Oh I see, I imagine to have the orphan kill the villain is the only proper revenge for Chen Ying, and although he didn't exactly push the boy, he still kind of manipulated him into dong it. I think it's unfair for the boy, he got embroiled in all this mess and then decided to kill someone he love. If he survives just imagine the confusion and trauma and schizophrenia...
Speaking of Soviet films, they also made a film adaptation of "The Idiot" during Soviet times, but the film was left unfinished. I watched part of it, I really like the Nastasia in that film, and I heard that the actress who played her was great, but I didn't much care for the actor who played Myshkin.
"occupied by people of very low moral and spiritual culture" - same here in China, but I guess there're beginning to be more and more people of culture in China, you can see the hope. But still things are kind of a freak show in my country, some young, good-looking actors who have absolutely no acting skills, no culture, no charisma and God knows if any brains get paid more in a day than acclaimed scientists get paid in a year.
It is a pity that quality art is gone with the collapse of the USSR, but since a lot of horrible things happened during the Soviet times, wouldn't you say that in a way it's a good thing that such times are gone?
