I LOVE this. I do think it would be great to see an updated version with Arnold in a baseball cap rather than a hipster hat. The cap suits his personality much more and I refuse to believe that a boy like that grew up to be THAT guy Β  Β And for the sake of continuity, it would be cool to see Nadine with her normal curly hair. Everything else is perfect though; you did an incredible job!

Obviously. The hair could be more yellow but the clothing and hat are a dead giveaway. He can't really have a "football head" in real life and I imagine that's more or less what he'd look like as a real kid, although there's another version that I think is a bit more accurate, with him looking grungier rather than like a hipster.

Alright, clearly my sarcasm can't be detected, so I'll just be blunt: I know that person's SUPPOSED to be Gerald, I know he's SUPPOSED to be Black, but the simple fact is, there are absolutely no African features whatsoever. The lightening of his dark skin is one thing, as is the straightened hair. Both could slide if that was all, because Black people come in all shades, and hair can be altered. But it's not. His facial structure has none of the features that denote African ancestry. No wider nose, no thicker lips, no high cheek bones. Even when the genes are diluted these dominant traits usually remain to show up if they're there. There was no reason to do this, as Gerald is not light-skinned, OR mixed race. To spell it out for you, that character is not Black. He looks like a white person who spent enough time at the beach to get a good tan. Or, if any minority at all, Hispanic, but even that's a stretch. Actually closer to Italian. In short, Gerald has been glaringly whitewashed in this graphic. And if you don't believe me, check out some of the artist's other works. Nearly all the Black characters are given the whitewash treatment to varying degrees, with few exceptions (Dijonay Jones). His version of Penny Proud comes to mind as another glaring example. This is unfortunate, considering the artist appears to be Afro American himself.

cjones96 In reply to UmiEbon [2015-03-15 19:35:19 +0000 UTC]

so what if Gerald's the only black person, phoebe's the only Asian, but because black people get so much attention on the media, African-americans are always the center of attention, but you don't hear a' lot of news about Hispanics or Asians who happen to do the same crime as us blacksΒ in the U.S. than whites. I'm just sayin, because even though their are non-white people on tv shows, black people are always pointed out the most.

UmiEbon In reply to cjones96 [2015-03-15 19:49:07 +0000 UTC]

You clearly didn't get the point. At all. The point wasn't that Gerald's the only Black one, the point is that he's he doesn't look Black in the illustration, or any way at all like he did in the actual show. He's been whitewashed.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

UmiEbon In reply to cjones96 [2015-03-16 16:33:31 +0000 UTC]

Really? THAT looks Black to you? Okay. Like I said before, he looks Mediterranean like Italian. Or like a White guy who's spent the summer in the sun and got a good tan. Now, of course, we Black people come in all shades, even lighter than what's above, so skin color's not my only grounds for saying that. There's also the facial features. They look more European. If that person up there is supposed to be Black, it would definitely be Black mixed with something else, which we know for a fact that Gerald was not. Plus he was chocolate in hue, so overall, there was no reason to depict him in such fashion. Read the first comment of mine that you replied to (given the nature of you reply, and the way it has zero to do with what I had said, I think you meant to reply to MissMoonMurder). I said all of this stuff in that comment.

cjones96 In reply to UmiEbon [2015-03-17 14:42:24 +0000 UTC]

it sounds like you saying that just because the way his face looks, he looks mixed with white, OK I FINALLY agree with you on something, he does look like he's mixed despite his skin color, but can't black people look as good as Gerald on this picture, and plus Gerald's not even chocolate, he has brown skin like caramel.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

UmiEbon In reply to cjones96 [2015-03-17 16:06:59 +0000 UTC]

Alright, so first off, yeah, Gerald is chocolate, not caramel. Look at this if you want proof.
www.hey-arnold.com/Arnold/Gera…

Second, Imma need you to back up, because I really don't think you realize what you just said, and what it just told me about you and how you think.

"....but can't black people look as good as Gerald on this picture..."

You used the phrase "as good as", to describe a comparison to his looks in the picture, while acknowledging that he looks mixed here, and that his African features have been downplayed. Am I to understand that you are saying that Black people's African features are not naturally beautiful? That we need to have some semblance of European ancestry, be it light skin, or straightened hair, or thin lips, or thinner noses, to look attractive (Gerald had none of those features in the cartoon, other than the lips, because of the creator's art style, but he has them all here)? Because if that IS what you meant, that way of thinking reeks of colorism and self-hate - the same self-hate I suspect drove the artist to sterilize all the ethnic features of not only Gerald, but damn near every other non-white character in all his works similar to this, probably thinking, "they just look 'better' like this", as he did so.

You remember the Proud Family, right? Go google it, just to jog your memory of how the characters looked. Then check out his rendition of Penny Proud. You'll have to be blind to not see what I mean.

cjones96 In reply to UmiEbon [2015-03-17 21:06:28 +0000 UTC]

I'm not a racist and I don't hate myself, I don't give a damn about color, you're the first one to say that Gerald doesn't look black because of the way his face looks, you're the first one who said that he resembles European descent. So, I maybe what I said did not sound right, but you're the one who thinks Gerald doesn't look black even though he's supposed to be. And about the proud family,Β I know what you mean, Gerald does not look anything like the Proud Family characters, he doesn't have big lips nor does he look like he got that street lingo like SOME characters on the proud family, but at least they don't look like they have European ancestry except for Zoe. so I'm not really sure what you mean, but it sounds like you're saying that Gerald doesn't have to look like a STEREOTYPICALΒ African-American to be black, is that what you trying to say?

UmiEbon In reply to cjones96 [2015-03-17 22:15:20 +0000 UTC]

"Gerald does not look anything like the Proud Family characters"
You're extremely confused. I never related Gerald's appearance in his show to the characters of the Proud Family. Alright, listen carefully, because I'm going to go slowly. Look at the way Gerald is drawn originally in Hey Arnold, and compare it to the way this artist has drawn him here, in this All Grown Up: Hey Arnold artwork. Look at the way Penny Proud is drawn in the Proud Family, and then compare it to the way this artist has drawn her in his All Grown Up: Proud Family artwork. Look at the way Vince from Recess is drawn originally, and then compare it to his appearance in this artist's All Grown Up: Recess artwork. In all cases, the original Black character had those unmistakable African features, and looked Black (not mixed race, Black), and in each of this artist's drawings, those same characters have been lightened up and their facial features Europeanized to look nothing like they did originally, ESPECIALLY Penny and Gerald. That's what I'm saying.

ok lets see if I get this now, the black characters on the show are dark skinned but on the artwork, their light skinned. am I right?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

UmiEbon In reply to cjones96 [2015-03-17 22:27:54 +0000 UTC]

Right. Light skinned, and everything about them showing they were black has been softened as well. If these characters were mixed, I wouldn't say anything. But they're not. If these characters were light skinned originally, I wouldn't say anything. but they're not. If these characters looked anything at all like they did in their original artwork, I wouldn't say anything. But they don't. And they're the only ones that don't.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

UmiEbon In reply to cjones96 [2015-03-17 23:10:27 +0000 UTC]

Hence why I said something about this. There was no reason to change those features so dramatically and consistently, other than the artist's opinion that such features are not attractive, and that they look better with a more European appearance. That's where my comment about self-hate came from. Because the artist gave the ethnic characters such an unnecessary whitewash treatment, alluding to that opinion, while being Black himself, and having many of those features himself (dude's got webcam photos on his profile page so we know what he looks like).
