That is really smooth! Do you pack it into a block or something and then sculpt it?

Exactly, we use wooden or plastic forms to compact the sand with a lot of water.

Oh so you use kind of a mold to do it.Β  Okay then it makes alot of since now.Β  I am a cast stone drafter and I a familiar with wet cast and dry cast.Β  I kinda thought it would have been similar to dry cast since dry cast is compacted and you can still chisel into it easily.Β  but you said alot of water.

So how long does this sand sculpture last?Β  or is it more of a permanent thing in some cases?

This not a casting process. When we remove the forms, all we have is a big block of sand. The only purpose of the forms are to compact the sand and be used as scafolding when we cannot reach from the ground. When we are done with the sculpture, we can spray a mixture of water and white or wood glue on it to help preserve it. It creates a thin protective shell around it. Altough it is not permanent, it will protect it from some rain, winds and sun. Applying enough of that mixture can make it stand for a whole summer if it's not harmed too much by the weather. I've seen sculpture outdoor that were standing for more than 3 years.Β The natural clay in the sand can make the sculpture harder as it dry, but it's still fragile. Indoor, some sand can stand up indefinatly without any glue.

That is what I thought you did, I suppose I did not make my self all that clear Β  To make an exact mold would have been expensive and time consuming, it would only pay off if you were making a bunch of them.Β  I figured you made a compacted block to carve into.

Interesting that you put a protective coating on it like that.Β  a rather long time for a sand structure to stay up.Β  So what kind of sand scuptuers do you like doing most?Β  Architectural structures, people like statues?

Anatomy is both challenging and fun to make. Architecture also have its challenge, but most artist will tell you that anatomy is where it's at. Despite this fact, most visitors will prefer castle because of the amount of details and the recognisable image, even if the carving and design is subpart. Actually, if you want to secure the people choice award in a contest, go with a castle and it's a 90% win garanteed.
