the part that really blows my mind is how the door is slightly ajar. How does that work?!?

I see sand sculpture like this and my mind can't understand how you make it work!

Iscariath In reply to Doctorwholovesthe80s [2014-04-15 13:57:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, this sand is pretty amazing with how much shearness it can get when properly compacted. The trick is also to use shadows to make it look like its free-standing when it actually got support.

Could you pls tell what materials you use making this kind of scuptures, I really love them

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Iscariath In reply to Lageveen [2014-04-15 13:59:27 +0000 UTC]

Fine sand with "square" or "flat" grain (when look under the microscope) with lots of clay content will get you the best results. Usually lake bed, river or quarry sand will have those properties.

Jeez that is freaking impressive... You must have to spray the sand with a fixative, there's just no way it maintains that kind of structural integrity. Incredible work. You also must have the patience of a saint.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Iscariath In reply to Deviatealittle [2013-10-13 14:03:34 +0000 UTC]

The sand will stand by itself. We will spray a mixture of water and white glue to it to protect it from the rain, wind, sun, but it's not what it make the sand stand. This sculpture probably weight over 50 tons, so no amount of glue will make it stand if it decide to collapse. Sharp grains and natural clay content will help the sand compact in such a way that you can get such height.
