This really happened to me while playing the Amnesia. I managed get on to the fallen column and Mr. Tall didn't reach me...until he suddenly had enough of my taunting, sprinted up and mauled me.

Something similiar happened to me in the Southern Prison Block, in the elevator room with the lion statues.
I had a Grunt who had found me hiding (in the lightened cell without the door), and started to chase me down the corridor, and I got in this room, and closed the barred gate, which gave me time to hide with the lion statue while he broke it down, and entered the room in a speed. As he searched for me, I got up, didn't think he could reach me, so I took up the lantern and started to tease him. But he actually managed to get up the same way the Brute can on the fallen-over pillars. He came up from the side of the statue and killed me with a single hit.

Yeah, I am pretty sure I had the same expression in my face like Daniel in that last panel.
I think the monsters are smarter than many give them credit for. That's why they can surprise us like that. Man, that's so not cool, but still it kinda is. I both love and hate those surprise buttkicking.

I tried to do the same thing you did and stand on a broken pillar.
Daniel went insane from looking at Brute and fell onto his side when he was after him.
..And he jumped up onto the pillar while Danny was down and killed 'em.
