Description
“If people were forced to eat what they killed, there would be no more wars.” - Abbie Hoffman
War can be a dark place, though that does not mean that everything is depressing. And the battlefield, is not lifeless. Lives may be lost, but there is most certainly lively activity occurring. Many people recognized that fact and were able to act a bit happier then the normal conscious would allow each night at camp, even if there were less around the fire. A group of six had understood it for a long period of time, after all they were countries, and had to learn. But she knew it better then anyone else did, and wasn't afraid to show it.
_______. That was her name, or so she had said. _______ hadn’t been in the best condition at the time that they had found her. She was in a P.O.W camp for unknown reasons. Or at least, what was left of one. She was beyond skinny, beaten, and bruised. After the Allied Forces had pushed forward after a successful raid, they found an abandoned camp. But she had been there in the medical room on the brink of death. All the others had left, but she still clung to what she had.
They did not hesitate in taking care of her, and she slowly returned back to normal health. But _______ could not be dropped off in a town. For whatever reason she was taken in the first place, she would most likely be taken again for the same reasons. At first she was very reserved around the soldiers and countries, she had been through a lot. But she slowly opened up and talked to them at night. During battle, _______ would hide in a tree with the best camouflage they had to offer. The Allies thought it was the best course of action for the girl, but they failed to realize what being in her position was like. It was about time she told them, if she still could. How agonizing it was to not know what was going on.
_______ looked down from the tree and watched intently as a group of people surrounded it. They barked multiple words in what she assumed to be German. Even if she had been a prisoner, most of her memories from that time had been blocked out for sanity purposes. Even though she was aware they had found her, she did not move. America, or rather, Alfred had told her that if she was found, she was not to move; no matter what. A few of them started to attempt to climb the tree. And in that second, she began to feel a bit frightened. But that was unnecessary, out of the corner of her eye she saw the glint of metal. _______ did not flinch as a round of bullets were fired and the Germans fell to the ground right before her. How heartless. Not even a flinch from the imminent deaths of multiple people, why was this so?
“Are you okay?” A soft voice asked
She looked down and saw Matthew looking at her with concern. His hair was a bit more messed up then usual and his uniform torn. She nodded and dropped her camouflage to the ground. He picked it up and tucked it away. _______ slowly and carefully made her way down the tree and next to the Canadian. If it was anyone else, the German soldiers would have been sure to notice and kill him. For once, he was happy with his supposed ‘invisibility’.
“I’m fine.” She responded, “What about you?”
“I am also well. Thank you for asking.”
She gave a small smile, “You’re a life saver, literally.”
He shyly rubbed the back of his neck and reddened a bit at the cheeks. She only gave him another smile, though this one a bit more reassuring. They began their walk back towards camp. She tugged her coat to make it more comfortable to wear. It was colder this time around, and most people didn't have the luxury of a coat. At first she had denied wanting it, but everyone in camp forced it upon her. _______ did not to ask him about the battle, the look on his face gave it all away. His eyes held the look of losing something that they shouldn’t have. The camp was more desolate then usual, she didn't have as many friends as she had earlier this morning. It was as if everyone was draped with remorse. It really must’ve been a bad one. _______ had never seen everyone like this, it must have been the first time it happened. They both walked into the big tent, just for the countries. They all shared one tent so they wouldn’t impose on the soldiers, but it could get a bit controversial at night. They all had different viewpoints on different subjects, so arguing was a regular occurrence. Not to say that it wasn't fun to hear them mess around about things that don’t matter.
“There you are Matthew.” Arthur stated as they walked in, his voice was croaked. Almost as if he had been crying, or if it was dry from lack of water.
“Sorry I was late.” He replied
“There’s no problem. It’s nice to see that you are safe as well _______.”
She gave him a smile, “Of course. But it was a close one.”
Francis looked at her with concern, “What happened?”
“Some German soldiers found me, but Matthew helped.”
“Good job protecting her.”
Matthew gave a polite nod.
She looked around the contents of the tent. Maps and papers laid scattered around, temporary candles lit the are well enough to see the grim expressions of everyone. Well, almost everyone. Ivan stood next to Yao who was sitting at one of the tables, planning out a route on one of the maps. Ivan seemed a bit unstable, as he was using the table for support. Francis redirected Matthew to some of the papers and they began organising them. But there was the absence of a loud, positive, American.
“Where’s Alfred?” She asked
Arthur looked up, his eyes tired and on the brink of losing light. He looked at _______, then at the opening of the tent, and then back at her.
“I’m not sure, love.” He stated, “He was very upset about today and went out on a walk.”
“Isn’t that dangerous?”
“Indeed it is, but he’ll be fine.”
“I’ll see if I can find him.”
_______ left the tent briskly. Arthur sighed as she disappeared and the flaps cut off sight of her. He then walked over to Francis and Matthew. He also began to help organize the papers.
“Where is she going?” Francis asked
“To find America.” Arthur's voice was still raspy.
He sighed and talked to Arthur in an accusing manner, “You haven’t been taking your share of the rations, have you?”
“I’m afraid there are others that need it more then I do.”
“Don’t say that, you’re a person as well.”
“I’m a country, dehydration can't kill me.” Arthur argued, “Now a drought, that’s another thing.”
He got back to work and Francis sighed to himself. He could be so selfless. He could almost guarantee that even after he had caught Arthur giving out his supplies and yelled at him for it, and even if he continued to ask him not to, he would. It was war, and he was being someone everyone needed to strive for. A selfless man.
“China, how many?” He asked, referring to the amount of deaths that had occurred in todays mission.
Yao turned around, hand on his head in a distressed manner. In his other hand he held the report.
“All around?” He asked
Francis nodded.
“Alright,” Yao continued, “For America, 233 deaths. For Canada, 23 deaths. For England, 127 deaths. For France, 163 deaths. For China...”
Yao cringed before he read the last two statistics, “China, 321 deaths. And Russia, around 500 or more. That was around this region and from what our bosses have told us.”
If that was only in this region, there must’ve been more going on outside in other battlegrounds, or even towns. The gazes were directed on Ivan. With a bit more light you would be able to see that he is more pale then usual. Russia was definitely taking a large toll from this war. Yao looked over his shoulder and peered at the large man.
“Are you okay?” He asked
“Da. I want to make Germany pay for betraying my people.” Ivan replied, “But it is hard to bear weight of thousands of people grief and anger.”
Ivan hit the nail on the head as the rest of the countries slowly accounted for their feelings at the moment, and their citizens. They made sure not to let one person's worries go unrecognized.
OoOoO OoOoO
_______ walked through the camp. If there was one thing she had learned since she had been rescued, it was be confident while you walked. People respect self confidence and won't try to belittle you in order to show that you have none. Even as she was, she gave off an aura to not mess with her. Maybe it was because of all she had gone through, or maybe because it’s just the way she was. Frankly, _______ wasn’t sure herself. But the soldiers would not disrespect her, and it was not because of what she had gone through in the camps. Rather, it was because she made herself a safe base. Or to say a sister, would be accurate.
As she made her way around the many tents and fires looking for Alfred, she noticed that no one was talking. Nothing was happening. _______ wanted them to start getting over it like they always do, like they always have to. She wanted to tell them that, but first she needed to find him. No heads were raised where there was a hint of her presence, but she did not look at them either. As she reached the end of camp, a familiar number came into view. 50.
“Alfred?” She called
He turned his head to the side, his glasses were not on his face but rather in his hands. _______ started to approach him and then curtly sat next to him. He looked up at the sky. There were many stars, many patterns. It took America’s mind off of things for a while, it was what she needed as well.
“What are you doing here _______?” He finally asked, “It’s dangerous to be close to the edge of camp.”
“I could say the same thing.”
“I’m a country, I’m not going to die. You on the other hand...”
“Don’t worry about me.” She interrupted
“Then you’re not allowed to worry about me.”
They stayed silent after that, looking out into the dark terrain. After all, the fires that illuminated the camp were behind them. _______ occasionally glance over at Alfred. It was strange to have him be so silent. She tried her best to wait until they had a good point of time to agree on. But she couldn’t do it and stood up, reaching a hand out for him to do the same. Alfred took it and smiled slightly.
“There it is.” She teased
“What is where?” He asked
“You’re smiling.”
“Yeah, well... it’s hard not to smile with you.”
She gave a small laugh, “Do you think we could cheer everyone up?”
“Of course we can, I’m the hero after all!”
His confidence was growing back bit by bit, just like every other time. But _______ feared for a day that it would be too far gone to bounce back. Hopefully the war will be over before that happens. She followed Alfred to center of the camp and by the main campfire. Many of the soldiers were sitting around it with blankets over their shoulders and a small glass of water. She was heartbroken to see soldiers that normally sat in groups, sitting alone with injuries. Grabbing a small glass of water that was meant for her, she watched as he cleared his throat.
“Hey guys!” Alfred called
Most of them looked his way, but others kept their eyes on the ground. He made his way to the center of it all and stood in a confident manner, but sadness glinted in his eyes.
“I want to thank you all for your hard work.” He stated, “You all have been very courageous, as have your fallen comrades.”
By this time the other countries had noticed what was going on and came out of the tent. Ivan was being supported by Yao, who was stronger then _______ had realized. They made their way over to her. She helped Ivan down onto a log that they were using for a a bench. He breathed heavily and huddled closer into his scarf. She had come to the conclusion that things weren’t going too well for anyone, and he was getting the brunt of it. Slowly she unbuttoned her coat.
“What are you doing?” Yao asked
“Helping.” _______ replied
She took off her coat and wrapped it around Ivan’s broad shoulders.
“No, you need it.” He argued
“Don’t make me force you to wear it.” She countered
Due to lack of energy, he did not argue.
“Thank you.”
She smiled and looked over at Arthur. He was watching as Alfred tried to give his inspiration speech. His eyes were soft, and looked like those of a proud father. _______ approached him and handed him her glass of water. She had not let the condition of his voice go unrecognized.
“What is this?” He asked before he took the cup.
“Water.” She replied, “You haven’t been taking your rations.”
He gave her a smiled and took a small sip, not wanting to deny her kindness. She was aware that he wasn’t going to stop sacrificing his needs, but she could at least help him when needed. Yao sat next to Ivan and kept him upright, concern laced his expression. Francis the same with Arthur, and Matthew to Alfred. The soldiers also, had a defeating look. _______ didn’t like it. She needed to live up to ‘sister’, and pay back the favor that saved her life. She walked over to where Alfred was standing, struggling for the right words to come out. She embraced him from behind and his head hung.
“Let me take care of this.” She whispered into his ear as she walked around him.
Alfred nodded and joined the other countries. Matthew immediately checked up on his brother. _______ took a deep breath and looked around at her comrades. Vomit daring to climb up her throat, but she refused to let it do so.
“It’s good to see everyone that is here.” She said kindly, “But also sad. For each of you here, it seems we have lost two in return. I miss them already, as I’m sure you do as well.”
She paused slightly to take a deep breath, “Though I mourn for my brothers that had been lost during our fight to free the oppressed, I will not let that squander my will. We all fight for the same thing, and we all stand not as an army full of individuals. But an army that is one.”
By now, everyone was looking at her, eye brimmed with tears. A shaky breath escaped and Francis noticed. He stood up and went to her side, rubbing her shoulder in a supporting way.
_______ continued, “But I will not let their efforts go to waste! I will not sit around! I will fight for myself, for you, for those back home, for my family, for everyone who is being oppressed or betrayed. I will fight for my brethren who no longer can! We did not come this far to stop now. We are two shovels away from a gold mine, we just need to keep digging.”
Through her foggy eyes, _______ could see most of the soldiers sanding now. Tears were falling from most of their faces, but they all matched hers.
A soldier cried out, “I will move forward! I will fight!”
Many soldiers echoed the cry and then the night was silent. No one back where it was safe could have comprehended the shared emotional resonance that rang out with each person's word and each fallens dying will.
The Allied Forces watched as _______ rallied their troops. The fire setting a stage behind her as she spread its hope to each soldiers bucket of inspiration. She walked back over to the countries and took Yaos hand. He looked at her with grief and she gave a smile that matched the same emotion.
“As for you guys.” She stated, “Being a country must be hard, but you are fit for the job.”
“_______, it doesn’t work that way.” Alfred countered
“America is right,” Ivan inputted, “We do not choose the job.”
“I never said that, I said that you are fit for it.” She countered
“What do you mean?”
“Such strong people, strong personalities, and strong wills, can handle anything. You fight for yourselves and everyone that lives under your name.”
Francis gave _______ a hug from behind. She smiled as the others did the same. And the group stayed with the soldiers around the campfire for the majority of the night. Stories and jokes were told, and spirits were raised. They stayed like this until the fire started to die out. _______ had saved everyone from themselves that night. And no, she did not do anything big, they did not need something big. After all, little light can go a long way.
