My advertisement image for Picturebook. Most of this was done with watercolor and colored pencil. However, per my agent's advice, I needed to add some atmosphere to the background. So the clouds, moon and stars were added digitally in Photoshop. I also did a little bit of work in gouache.My agent wanted to showcase that I can do both people and animals, so I tried to pack this piece full of various animals. The most challenging part of this piece was just all the detail, and also trying to deal with the night time lighting. Compared to a year ago, I feel that this piece shows a lot of growth in my style and ability. (Last year at this time, I was painting "New Diver", which is in my gallery.

Wow. This reminds me of "The Animal Fair," a book that my grandmother used to read to me when I was little. There was a song that went with it. *sigh*... Nostalgia.

Have you heard the orchestral piece? It's absolutely incredible!
My favorites are the swan segment and the finale. The finale was featured in "Fantasia 2000".

Thank you! At first my agent was concerned about the background, and so I made some revisions (the updated version is what is posted here). Once I revised the background a little, she was really pleased. I hope that the potential clients like the image as well.

I agree, I think you have grown a lot- this is a great piece. Your children are changing slightly- and I like the way they're going.
Does your agent pay for your page in Picturebook? I checked out their rates... yow! Is Picturebook considered pretty effective? Next month I'm going to get a ChildrensIllustrator page... its a little more in my budget!

Hey, Aja. My agent pays 25% of some set advertising costs, and I pay 75%. For instance, to be a part of this agency, you agree to advertise in Picturebook, on the agency website, and you can opt to advertise on ChildrensIllustrators.com and Ispot (and a few others). For these costs, the agent pays 25% and I pay 75%. The agency also does other advertising (like sending out samples from my portfolio and targeted marketing and mailings) which I do not pay towards. For every project, my agent takes 25% commission and I take 75%. I have been pleased with the arrangement. This will be my second year advertising with the agency through Picturebook. Overall, I think printed directories can be hit-or miss with individual artists, but since my agency has a large presence in Picturebook, I think that works in my favor. I advertised myself in DIrectory of Illustration for 2 years. The first year I got Pirate School through Grosset & Dunlap. After that, though, I did not get new projects through that printed annual.
