after a failed experiment, Gaster managed to survive. he started to think about returning Sans' mind and learn about DT more. that's what he did. approximately at the middle of genocide, Sans was caught by Gaster and they fought. Sans lost at that battle and was taken back to the true lab. Gaster managed to extract most of DT Sans had. next, he managed to learn about DT more. Sans woke up, he was confused af. he met Gaster at his room, learning more about the liquid they used for experiments. Gaster told Sans he needs a mercenary. Gaster needs some souls for researches, and Sans agreed on that Gaster is supposed to go a bit insane after learning about DT so that's why he needed Sans to get some monster souls. some crazy researches
