Wow!! I'd love to see more angles of this. It's awesome! The detail is astounding! This must have taken forever! How big is it?

Thanks! It's well over 100 lbs of clay (can't remember how heavy exactly) and about 3 feet long. I actually was going to do a silicon mold and cast a few in taxidermy foam, but alas, I was in college, broke, and had to borrow (with permission) another artist's clay to make this. One day, weeks into the sculpture, he decided he wanted his clay back, so without telling me, he came in one weekend and took all his clay off the armature. Live and learn...

Beautiful.

Thank you so much. Your comment is appreciated and yes, I sculpted it. Started with a wire armature that was kind of cool itself (looked like a 3D programs wireframe), then put on layers of clay, then used a simple clay tool to detail and give it a surface.

OMG!! I think I would have killed the person who ripped this apart.... sooo amazing!!!! Nice work!!! at least you have a pic to remember it. I had teachers who stole my school projects cause they wanted them so bad, whats the deal with that??

Perhaps your work is REALLY good and that's why they stole it

that looks awesome, I wish I could sculpt that well...theres just something about the horns that doesn't look quite right. Other than that, it's amazing

Thanks-as mentioned in the post, I never got to finish the horns (just made shapes to stand in until I could sculpt realistic horns.

mintysma [2005-03-10 11:53:15 +0000 UTC]

wow, what amazing detail!

what type of clay have you used for this?
will it be for a mould or something?
how will you dry it?
will it be fired?

(sorry for the questions, but i'm really interested in making these sort of works, but don't know how!)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ivanjs In reply to mintysma [2005-03-10 12:33:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

The clay is oil-based, so there's no firing involved.

Long story, but another artist had loaned me his clay because I was short of funds at the time, and when I came back from school break, he had ripped the whole thing apart because he needed his clay back (without a phone call to me or anything!).

I never got to finish the horns the way I wanted, so that's why they look a bit on the thin side.

So years later, I built another one, but it was much smaller and not quite as detailed as this one, and I eventually lost interest in the whole project.

I like everything except for the horns, they should be curved from what I remember. Then again... I haven't studied dinosaurs for a while. Nice job though. One of the first real art pieces I have seen on Dev art since a long while.

ivanjs In reply to Setae [2005-03-10 06:11:08 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely right. I never finished the horns the way I wanted, but no longer wanted to work on the piece, so there it is. thanks for the comment!
