how do you keep your character edges so clean ? Is lara on completely separate layer from background or do you useΒ  lock transparency on a color layer, or erase edges, or are you just really precise on coloring within her shape?

hey yes I keep her on a separate layer, in the beginning I mask the whole character (in that step precisely coloring in the shapes) later I use these selections. Every element is on a different layer (the arm, or the knee that intersects with other parts). Here are WIP Steps of another character I made in a similar way: sta.sh/01skhe1qgx9g

thanks for your reply I wasn't expecting one so soon! I have a very hard time keeping my paint all within the character shape because I love to apply color from the atmosphere with soft brushes, but I have never gotten in the habit of keeping the character on separate layers or masked (even though I know how to mask). I appreciate your link, too!

One more question, based on the link, the way you have separated the colors- are all the pink objects on one layer, all the green on a layer, and purple on a layer, etc? Or did you rough in the color with the WHOLE character shape first, then start coloring individual objects above rough colors?

yes exactly, the same colored shapes are on the same layer (they dont touch each other, this way I save layers, as I don't like to have to many layers).Β

You can use the masking tool, in my case I just paint it out with a brush on 100% and then put on the transparency lock.
The purpose of the strong colors is only to better distinguish them (and to leave no white inbetween them), after that I color them into basic colors.
I know what you mean, I also like to have a natural flow and use the surrounding colors. If you use this extreme clean masking it can look to sharp, so I only use it as long as I need it and later go over the edges again.Β

thank you! Actually I worked over 2-3 weeks on it, it's hard to tell how many hours in total, I spend everyday a few hours on it. Specially the details and the clean-up take a lot of time.

Hmm. If I may ask a question: On Step 5 did you just smudge/blur the colors in together from step 4?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Izaskun In reply to AnonAegis [2013-03-29 09:33:49 +0000 UTC]

In 4 I had just a rough sketch showing where light comes from. From there I did not blur the colors, but added more colors and values, sometimes picking up colors with the eyedropper tool. The smoothness comes from painting over and over with a smooth brush to blend the colors.
