Conceptual art for my book.

The likely final template for the phoenix's in my story. And let me tell you this picture was a monster of a pain in my backside. Issues just kept popping up making this one of the most time consuming non-paintings or even pieces of art I have done. First it was the pose that gave me problems, then the flipping wings and their feathers, and then of course how long coloring choice took.

I drew this all plaining on making it blue. Obviously it didn't turn out that way. First of all its been done before. Firstly by me when I was in jr high (If I ever get sentimental enough and get enough desire I will take a photo of it to show you all), secondly by whomever else had the similar idea, and finally by One Piece (In honor of the fact that he was going to be blue originally and Marco is a very cool pheonix/pirate the name is derived from his). So yeah since I have made every attempt not to be cliche I decided "Hey some copper compounds + fire is green" (Geeky science driven portion of my brain) and then "green is pretty" (artsy part of the brain) and "I don't think I have ever seen a green phoenix" (Logical side). So green it was.

So I started coloring it in...and decided that all green was a no-go as it would be way too monochrome for my tastes--even when I started adding the yellow-tones. So I googled around and thought--hey Quetzals are green, and red too so I decided maybe to go with that----and my friend who I asked an opinion of promptly told me that Christmasy-pheonix was not the best idea I have ever had.

So went with orange after several discussions with both my friend, my mom, and my brain.

Right ranting done.

Overall, he turned out fantastic and I adore how the tail feathers especially turned out. They make me VERY happy. The wings also, very nice. The chest and neck....still needs work, I have yet to figure out the correct techniques to get the foofy feather look.
