Description The greatest of all black dragons. May I present to you all--as promised--Morkeleb the black from Barbara Hambly's Dragonsbane books-Credit to here for comming up wiht him. (They are a VERY good set of four books). I based his body type off the discriptions she gave and modifyed them to my style. I took license with the number of toes he has though--If I remember correctly there are supposed to be six on each paw but I couldn't get it to look right. Also the tenticles, six looked better than two.

I rarely do fan art (I can think of but a handful I have done) but Morkeleb deserves to be drawn and he so rarely is. He is also one of my all time favorite characters in literature.

It also gave me a chance to do a totally black dragon.

I really need to re-draw Morkeleb again someday, your version is very inspiring.
I love how you drew the flow of his body and all the texture details. What tools did you use?

This one was one of my earlier forays into Prismacolor markers (2009 so yeah I've made some changes since then, lots of refinement).Β The paper for this piece was nothing special for example.

In the years since I drew this I have since graduated to using paper that is specifically for markers and doesn't bleed through unless you are trying pretty hard (Canson Pro-layout marker paper, make sure you are using the right side of the paper or your color washes out weird). As for outlining pens, I'm still looking for the perfect one that doesn't erase off with my pencil line but I am pretty fond of my Coptic Multiliner pens as they don't react poorly with Prismacolor and I generally don't have to reoutline a picture completely after erasing pencil...just parts. If I am willing to put the time in I use Radiograph pens as they are, once again almost perfect, but they take cleaning and a lot of time to prep. Additionally, you need to let Radiograph in set and dry for a while so you don't get streaks from your hands going through wet ink. Additionally heavy ink areas, even dry, may bleed when a marker is applied over top and streak into your color. However Radiograph don't seem to erase off so there is another trade off.

Thank you! This is still one of my better dragon poses where I didn't screw up the frontish view of the wings, I need to see if I can do a better updated version at some point.

It's interesting to see how people use different tools and medias together.

You're welcome! Morkeleb is awesome! It is a great picture of him! I think more people should know about him! He is my most favorite dragon. I watch & read just about anything I can get my hands on for dragons & I LOVE dragons, so thats saying alot for me! I have talked to very few people who knew who he was. Most people I have ever asked said " WHO IS MORKELEB? " I was like OO; " How can you NOT know who Morkeleb is! " LOL! ^^

Oh Morkeleb, how I adore you. <3 My most favorite Dragon character of all time.
It's nice to see another piece of fanart for Morkeleb The Black. He's really an amazingly complex character...but since so many people haven't read the Winterland's series, there aren't many who draw him. I wish I could re-read the whole series, but sadly I'd need to re-buy the whole set. Lost them all while moving three years ago. D:

Love the picture and the style you did him in, as well as the extra barbles. ;D

Thank you so much Nashiil has a couple of picks of him and i found a few others that are in my favorites, I am going to do others from the serise at some point besides him and Centh. He is one of my favorites too, I feel so bad for him in the series he is indeed complex.

Thank you mine also, Centhwevir is my second fav. I am always happy to find another fan, there is a distinct lack of fan art though...makes me sad.

I KNOW!! One of the all time greatest dragons in fiction, I love him, I'm going to do one of C*** (His name sucks to spell but the "blue knotted with gold").

I really like Hambly's concept of dragons. I have always judged other authors' dragons against Morkeleb, and none of them have held up. Maybe because he was the first dragon I ever read about and therefore my favorite. None can dethrone him!
I will be eagerly awaiting your C**** (blast those hard to spell and pronounce names)!

I see you know whom I am speaking about, I may do the purple guy too that Jen's son is partnered with in the later books.

I haven't read the books, but this is great! I love the shading on the scales (though they do make his overall form a little hard to read), the spines on his back and head and his horns, and his tail (especially his tail... it's just cool).

Izreal-Foofuraw In reply to musiqueen [2009-01-29 04:49:57 +0000 UTC]

I noticed that too, I tried to keep his form as intact as I could thats why he was so much of a challenge--his feet on the left side of his body especially. (If you would like to know you see his chest as the main part and then he twists.) Thank you, Hambly said that StarDrakes have spines at every joint and down the back and were...well sharp so I just put in spines and spikes everywhere it looked good.

Thank you for your comment.

Alright. Part of what threw me off at first it the strong line of scales on his chest and the bottom of his neck, since I'm used to seeing those on the back of a dragon, but after switching between the the preview and full view a couple times I figured it out

Sorry about that, I was experementing with his belly/chest scales a bit. You're not the first to be confused like that, my mom was too when I showed her the inked version.
