I took this chance to try and "elaborate" the designs for each of these characters in the case that I wouldn't have time to get back to them... for a while.
So this became more of a personal project than anything; but again, I did tell him that I was going to dedicate this to him--
Don't mind the mistakes, time parodoxies and relative size-distance measurement I can see them ALL.
Outline done traditionally with pencil lines, erased after ballpoint pen ink and colored in with Photoshop CS3.

I'm sure those couples exist out there somewhere, but Hell. Maxie was crushing all over campus in that dreaded sequel along with that other wonderful man... 8D

Agreed on most ladies (except Mona because I haven't actually watched that... is it really part of the Goof Troop continuity?) but there are some changes I'd make to Beret Girl to suit my own biases you're all too familiar with at this point:

Ironically enough, I was looking for artwork of Debbie (to gauge just how popular she was for a one-shot character) when I found this. I'm not disappointed she wasn't included, though--I don't actually have much interest in her myself.
For me it would depend on Sylvia's presence. Yeah, it matters a lot more to me that the AEGM couples stay together than the AGM couples, so what?
I know nothing about Mona except that she kinda sorta looks like Roxanne and has her same voice actress. If she's another flat non-character, I have to berate Goof boy for being SHAL-LOW.
Yeah... well you know me. With Pete, it's PERSONAL. Yet I can go relatively easy on Bradley who went farther one time than Pete ever did... huh. Probably because Bradley doesn't have power over PJ in the sense that Pete does.

WEIRD TANGENT
Max and PJ are an interesting take on the Heterosexual Life Partners trope--two characters of the same gender who are not romantically linked but are as close or closer than a romantic couple. Often, these characters will become jealous of love interests. But these two are consistently shown to support each other's love lives.

And oddly enough, this was the only PJ-centric episode where Pete wasn't shown or implied to be an abusive scumbag. Not that he helped his kid, but he tried and isn't that all that really matters? (No. But it does help.)
If it were up to me, Goof Troop would have more episodes and more recurring characters. But I was one when it was on; clearly it wasn't up to me.

I think Mona might actually have more plausible on-the-screen character than Roxanne (shocker), but I really enjoyed Roxanne in those clippings of the Disney Adventure Comics I found; a streak of toughness/stubborness.

While I agree that eroticism and romance are different, I would contest the idea that love and romance are the same. Romance to me is a specific subtype of love. That said, I was trying to convey the trope in similar words to what was presented on the page, and didn't select the words "romantically linked" on my own...

I'm in an odd position with Pete myself. I'll rant for hours on end about him... and then I'll turn around and write something where he's portrayed mildly sympathetically. Maybe I don't hate Pete as much as I'd like to think...

Either that or "Meanwhile Back at the Ramp." And "Puppy Love", "Date with Destiny", and the odd anomaly "Educating Goofy."
Mostly I just thought the antagonist was bland and that the conflict wasn't compelling enough, so PJ's behavior kind of broke my willing suspension of disbelief, due in part to the episode's "out of sight, out of mind" attitude about Pete.

Sonic and Amy are cool. I'm partial to Knuckles because he's prudent and too honest for his own good... AHEM.

There is another trope, Chastity Couple, for people who are explicitly in love but have a nonsexual relationship. Though this isn't applicable for G-rated movies even by '90s animation standards.
I knew there was a reason I identified with PJ. Wait...
At least I can retain some faith in "Pete Apologists" as I like to call them because I've never seen them say PJ deserves the way Pete treats him. They're much more likely to say "lalala I'm not listening" until Pete goes into paternal protection mode and then take that at face value even in very complex cases like "Axed By Addition."

I read the reason Knuckles is so gullible is because he believes that deep down there is some good in everyone...

Well, maybe... but fans do have their ways of mind-bogglingly interpreting characters. I have seen someone say that Goofy "tortures Pete for the lulz" which is just flat-out ridiculous.
Is that permission? xD. I'll try to keep it brief... ish.
"Axed By Addition" was very complicated because Pete did go on a high-speed chase through the town trying to apologize to PJ for being so mean to him while he thought PJ was sick and dying but:
1. It was Pete's fault PJ decided to play sick
2. It was Pete's fault PJ had to try so hard to play sick
3. Pete chooses his own self-interest over PJ by trying to avoid "killer germs"
4. Pete explicitly acted out of a desire to absolve his "lifelong guilt" when he went after PJ again
5. Pete immediately reverts to his unpleasant parenting style as soon as he finds out PJ's not really dying.
I personally really like that episode for its portrayal of their relationship. That and I could relate to PJ's crippling grade anxiety.
When I was a kid, I loved it. Considering all the reasons I love it the best now were things I barely noticed or didn't notice until I was at least a teenager... I wonder what I liked back then.
