Description Again a long exposure from sylt but this time featuring an old house. I photographed it from the garden of the house I stayed in during my holidays. This was actually the very first photo I made wiht my new long exposure kit. I really liked how the clouds turned out but the post processing took so much time. Just as always when shooting landscapes I had some dynamic range issues and so I decided to do seperate editings of the foreground and the clouds but creating the layer masks turned out pretty complicated. Even though I used a graphic tablet (Wacom Intuos Pen) it still took some hours to finish the edit due to all these small branches..

Camera data: Nikon D5300 + Nikkor 16-85 @ 18mm with Haida ND1000 (on Mantona Tripod)| f/10 | 34s |ISO 100

A very lovely shot.Β  It looks calm and peaceful their.Β  I know it took a lot of work to get those details in those soft clouds.Β  I think this photo really does well in black and white.Β  If you had left it in color it would of been too distractingΒ  and the viewer would not see all the details.Β  Not sure but it looks like your tripod was on a slight angle.Β  The house appears to be tilting.Β  You might want to try and straighten it.Β  I have the same problem when I use my tripod . Also great job with the dynamic range.Β  It isn't right in your face.Β  It is soft and subtle.

I never really worked with a tripod before so I don't have that much experience with it yet but I'll do my best to get better at working with it. So big thanks for your critique even though I'm responding so late..

CRPhotography comment:
Hi Monsieur
I like your shot. I mean: you managed to focus on the long exposure, it was your fist shot with your kit, and you successfully to my humble point of view to get a great and beautiful aspect of the sky.
Though, I would say that I am bothered by two little things about composition and framing.
For composition, I quite disagree with more sky in your shot. There is a good balance, you respect the third lines rule horizontally.
But then I get a bit lost with the part of the house shown on the right side. I would have loved to get your main house reaching the right border.
Then about framing: A slight angle would have improved the lines and perspective emphasized by your sky. A bit more horizontal. The bottom of the roof of the main house should have been more straight to me. Again, this is my view
Your post process is great since you managed to get back details from all trees and dark areas for the foreground.

A great first shot with your kit anyway, kind of an atmosphere!

Cheers my friend,

Houman

It's a good composition indeed. But I think the less of horizon and more of sky would be lovely.

Woah! Stunning! I love the dramatic/ dynamic sky! It works very well in black and white. The composition is very well chosen. You put the house in the right place and the horizon too. I'm curious what it would look like in color. But I love this shot in B&W as well! Great job!

Here you can see the color versionΒ Color Β
I think the doesn't look nearly as dramatic as in the black and white, also the colors in the foreground are really boring, thats why I took the black and white version

This shot actually give the feeling of Time going on, while the old house is stuck in one point of time; left behind. Beautiful!
