Description "Genetic Power's the most awesome force the planet's ever seen, but you wield it like a kid who's found his dad's gun.... and before you even knew what you had you patented it and packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunch box, and now you're selling it, you want to sell it" - Jurassic Park

The 10 largest antitrust law firms in the United States have gone into the federal courts charging Monsanto with creating a global conspiracy in violation of the antitrust laws, to control the global market in seeds - Jeremy Rifkin

...not to mentions that the seeds they push the hardest are the ones that are designed to resist damage from RoundUp weed killer which has known negative effects on the hormonal systems of vertebrates (incl. humans). Then there are the seeds designed to have the plants produce their own insecticides. Chemicals that kill -all- insects good and bad and are a major factor in the devestation of honeybees in every country in which they are used...

Ethics is extremely important. Without it someone that perform "scientific research" can easy hide some very questionable activity, or some simply anti-moral behavior behind the wall of "science".
Let's take a look: Experiments on humans are non-ethical and forbidden. But recently some groups of individuals were making pressure on obtaining stem cells from humans at embryonic stage of development this leads to simply eliminating a living human at first developmental phases. What is more striking they know that the other groups of scientists are making research that leads to
obtaining analogical cells in process that do not involve destruction of human being. Reprogramming of cells (ethical way) requires more knowledge, and more effort but in result it is leading to predictable outcome. This can bring tissue engineering, organs for transplantations without donors - grown synthetically in cultures. Think about it: artificial blood with the type that specific person
requires without the need of gathering form unknown people (many of them can have diseases). Organs without waiting for donor. Many human lives could be saved. But the same goals are targeted
by non-ethical individuals that seek "shortcuts" and misguided and with wrong intentions, greedy impulses are spreading info that "embryonic stem cells" can be used in therapy. The results of
clinical research strongly show that embryonic cells are unable to control and can lead to carcinogenesis in patients tissues.

Which is sad people that make the law are rather not concerned with reality and are easy to influence by groups of interests - that's why in some countries experiments on embryos are allowed, which is
makes our times another dark age. In some countries however it is unable to patent results of research that involved destruction of human embryos.

The plants and plant biotech products are not harmful to humans - no one can be genetically modified by taking plant DNA - plants are not compatible with our cells (they have genes that cannot work with our cellular machinery), so any transformation cannot take place.

In general it is good to know scientific side of the things that we are talking about. The "junk" DNA that do not code functional genes have other functions like regulation of other gene expression,
other parts of "junk" are some genetic "fossils" that represent genes that have lost their function. Such big amount of largely not functional material protects us form effects of ionizing radiation that
can destroy DNA leading to mutations...

And yes. Some of scientists in biotech are really arrogant. And completely not ethical, not only in way of work but also in making false results -BUT this can be quickly detected. This is also presents
in all scientific areas. Science itself and real scientific results demand high ethical standards. That's why I see the strange correlation between lack of ethics and lack of any valuable results...

Again, maybe some private corporation's actions can be a matter of discussion, but not every Jurassic Park quote is right. Biotechnology is the best thing for humanity!

I really don't believe so. Biotech is a nightmare, potentially catastrophic.

This is a strictly scientific issue. We can be only well informed or not.

Scientists in biotech are a rather arrogant lot. Only a few years ago they were telling everyone that introns were just "junk" genetic material that served no purpose. If they continue to play "god" while obviously knowing almost nothing about 99% of the genetic material that they're manipulating, how long before a real nightmare problem occurs? A lot of the GMO is already out in the open environment, causing unknown amounts of damage that's going to be hell to fix - if it can be fixed. The problem is that science these days lacks ethics.
