Description In the summer of 2006 I was teaching art classes for kids at the Old Sculpin Gallery on Martha's Vineyard. One day I decided we should have a pirate day, so I had the kids design their own treasure maps and then showed them how to age the paper. Basically, we crinkled the paper, ripped it up, dropped some ink blotches on it, dunked it in water, and then rubbed inexpensive coffee grounds into the paper. It worked really well.

This was the demonstration one that I made up in advance so that I would have a map all designed and ready when it came time to show the kids how to age the paper. The kids helped me name a bunch of places on the map - influences came from (obviously) Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan, The Princess Bride, The Wizard of Oz, and things around Martha's Vineyard. It was one of the most popular projects we did all summer.

Materials used: plain white printer paper, ink, watercolor, a little bit of watered down gold acrylic paint, water, and coffee grounds.

Arrr matey!

I wish I had the talent to do that. Β My son needs this for his treasure Island presentation. Β I'm having a devil of time trying to find something like this that I can get and blow up for his poster board. Β Great job!!!

It fairly fits the bill quite nicely!

I must have been asleep when I wrote that 1st clue. It was supposed to be:

Clue 1: "A major city 330 mi WEST of Stolkholm, Sweden"

I may have to shut down this attempt and work on constructing it a bit better before launching. Though unfortunate events I was forced to launch it ahead of schedule.

Great map. I work on a free ezine about roleplaying games and the next issue is about 'gold'. I'd like to use this map in it, if you're ok. I'll credit you, of course.
The ezine will be release in two day online, here: [link]

I like crumpling up my paper before I draw on it to make it seem really old and stuff, and then I do it with like a stack of other papers so it seems like a full document. I don't know what's wrong with me. o:

Since it's for educational purposes, you can use it as long as you include a little label then says "illustration by Jackie Sullivan", or just make sure my name isn't cut off of it. Good luck with your students!

Yarr! This is awesome! I've done a few maps myself, but on a big scale (I'm talking...ten foot by ten foot?)
You should do a big one too! You've got creative ideas when it comes to the staining, and I recommend using a lighter for some bits and peices (for your own fun, kids shouldn't be trusted with lighters...)

I guess the coast could be made with a little more detail and less lines. But anyway, nice map.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jackieocean In reply to mvodak [2007-07-04 18:20:44 +0000 UTC]

The reason the map was kept simple, with not too much detail, was because this was for an art class geared towards children, as explained in the description. The example had to be something that would give them ideas but wouldn't be too intimidating.
